ANNEX 1 PROJECT DOCUMENT In poultry sector infectious diseases are related with important economic losses. The diagnosis in this particular field is really important, because it allows the practitioners to apply the right measure to contain the clinical problem (antibiotic treatment) and the spread of pathogens (biosecurity measure). The diagnosis of avian disease is mainly supported by molecular and serological methods and of course based on the clinical signs that could be seen during the outbreak. Moreover in particular for mycoplasma diagnosis we can use specific laboratory methods in order to maintain the live strain for further laboratory investigations that could be helpful for a better therapeutic approach or epidemiological study. The IZSVe working on the avian diseases issue by several years and have a large quantity of experience and data regarding the avian pathogens including Mycoplasma spp. In IZSVe laboratory mycoplasma culture and isolation is considered a standard procedure as well storing the isolates in a strain bank. This allows us to keep live strains for a long period and for any further laboratory investigations. Nowadays the poultry industry requires more data on drug susceptibility of mycoplasma in order to implement new therapy strategies and to obtain successful recovering of bird containing the economic losses.
