Degrees. Degrees applicable to salary schedule placement, advancement or degree-related stipends shall be issued by an accredited institution. An accredited institution shall be defined as one which has been accredited or is a recognized candidate for accreditation by a regional accreditation agency. In instances where the candidate for advancement, placement or degree-related stipend does not possess a degree from such an institution, but feels special circumstances exist, he/she may submit a request to the Vice President of Instruction for a special review of his/her degree. Upon recommendation of the Vice President of Instruction and approval of the Chancellor or his/her designee, such special degree may be accepted in whole or in part for advancement, placement or degree-related stipend.

Degrees. The University shall confer degrees or award diplomas and certificates in all branches of learning taught in the University or in an Affiliated University College, including Theology, upon persons who, having complied with the requirements of the Senate are admitted to such degrees, diplomas and certificates by the Senate.
Degrees. 1. As set forth in Appendix A, a VSC required minimum degree or an approved substitute is a requirement for promotion and tenure, except as provided in Appendix E. 2. After consultation with the Federation, the Colleges may add or delete degrees from the list in Appendix A. 3. By December 1 of the first year of service, the President shall give a faculty member preliminary notification in writing that he/she has or does not have a VSC required minimum degree. 4. By March 1 of the third year of service, the President shall give a faculty member final notification in writing that he/she has or does not have the VSC required minimum degree or the President shall notify the faculty member in writing that the Board of Trustees is actively discussing changing the VSC required minimum degree at issue, in which case the VSC shall give final notification in writing to a faculty member by September 1 of the fourth year of service. Once final notification has been given to a faculty member that he/she has the VSC required minimum degree, the Vermont State Colleges shall not change the degree requirements for that faculty member. a. By January 1 of the first year of service, a faculty member who does not possess a VSC required minimum degree may offer professional experience, attainment, and/or training which may represent a substitution for an appropriate required minimum degree. b. Within six months of receiving a request from the faculty member to do so, the President shall decide whether the factors in a. above shall constitute a substitution for an appropriate required minimum degree and shall provide the faculty member with a written statement of his/her decision. The decision of the President shall not be grievable or arbitrable. c. In evaluating a request for substitution for a required minimum degree, the President may seek the advice of a recognized person or persons in the same career/professional fields and/or the advice of an ad hoc committee established to evaluate the level of professional achievement. Such individuals and/or committee members, either from within or without the College, shall be selected by the President after consultation with the Chancellor and the appropriate department chairperson. d. The President shall give reasons for a negative decision only when that decision contradicts the recommendation of the recognized person or persons or ad hoc committee mentioned in c. above.
