Temporary Vacancy. When a temporary vacancy is to be filled in a classification for which there is an existing eligibility list, the City shall attempt to make the temporary appointment from that list. Provided there are City employee applicants meeting the minimum qualifications, temporary vacancies of greater than 90 days shall be filled by existing City of Berkeley employees from existing eligibility and/or transfer lists except as otherwise provided in Section 52 (Layoff). When the employee completes the temporary appointment, the employee would then return to his/her former classification at the appropriate pay level. The employee shall suffer no loss of seniority in his/her classification as a result of filling a temporary vacancy. The City does not guarantee a permanent promotion to the employee working in a temporary appointment. Employees shall indicate availability for temporary appointments on an employment application. Employees may update their existing application forms to indicate their availability for future temporary appointments.
