Training on Translation of Research into Extension and Outreach. ‌ GRAIN extension specialists and management worked this quarter to design training materials to support implementation of the Translating Research Information into Extension Training Packages, which will be a comprehensive training program piloted next quarter, with the aim of bringing research and extension personnel together for practical training in research methods, tools, and techniques. Drawn from ARIA and DAIL offices in GRAIN’s four partner provinces, training participants will in turn disseminate learnings through various extension channels that cascade educational information and practical guidance to farmer and private sector levels, within the Wheat Value Chain. Based on translation of ARIA research outcomes, the curriculum consists of three primary components; being the importance of developing effective written materials such as factsheets, publications, brochures and posters, then understanding and compiling compelling and informative PowerPoint presentations that include the option of producing short videos to effectively convey how to follow methods and procedures. The third component is accessing mass media and social media to optimize extension communication. This may include utilizing radio, TV, targeted text messaging, Facebook and Whatsapp. Training implementation will roll out fully by PY3.

Training on Translation of Research into Extension and Outreach. This activity is planned to commence in Q3-Q4 as a component of training for Small Grants Program grantees and as a specific training session in the Research Farm Management Training Program (see Activity 1.A.2).

Training on Translation of Research into Extension and Outreach. ‌ The Translating Research Information into Extension Training Packages will be a comprehensive training program with the aim of bringing research and extension personnel together for practical training in research methods, tools, and techniques. The training will be implemented in three training sessions, which will be delivered starting in Q4 (if the public health situation allows) in Kabul, as well as in Nangarhar, Balkh and Herat provinces with implementation led by GRAIN/MSU (note change to PY3 Work Plan which indicated this activity would be added to CIMMYT’s expanded SOW): ● Session 1: Basics of Extension Theory and Methods; Effective Use of Printed Materials ● Session 2: Face-to-Face Extension Methods/Field Demonstrations ● Session 3: Information Communication Technology Methods, including Radio, Television, Social Media, and other Mass Communications As GRAIN’s DCOP and other staff members made progress in curriculum design and organizations, project staff also developed and released a Scope of Work (SOW) for two extension specialists. These consultants will assist in content development and serve as trainers for the continuation of the Research to Extension training package. After posting the position through social media, GRAIN received three applications and will make a selection through standard local consultant review and selection procedures at the start of Q3. On 17 March, XXXXX held a coordination meeting with Deputy Minister of Irrigation and Livestock in order to share updates and more detailed plans for this training program. At the meeting, XXXXX also discussed the need to form an Extension Communications and Information Development body that would help identify information needs, be responsible for approving newly developed extension materials, and oversee printing and distribution, as well as link ARIA researchers into the process. Next steps are for GRAIN to send an official request letter, then MAIL /DAIL will introduce points of contact and training participants.
