Statement on Outcomes In general, the population of Leicestershire experiences better than national average health, however, this experience is unequal across the County. Only a few areas (parts of Loughborough and of Xxxxxxxxx xxxx in North West Leicestershire), could be described as seriously disadvantaged, falling within worst 20% national deprivation scores, as measured by Index of Multiple Deprivation 2004. However, there are concerns from a health point of view about worse than average access measures in more remote rural areas, which can create a specific type of health inequality. Detailed health need analysis shows startling and significant differences across Leicestershire, which are rarely, reflected in higher level health indicators. With its ageing population and with the predicted increase in obesity and overweight, Leicestershire can expect some significant rises in prevalent chronic diseases, such as diabetes or Coronary Heart Disease, which can lead to life-threatening complications. Action is required to prevent these changes through effective health promotion targeting damaging lifestyle choices, such as smoking, unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity, and through tackling inequity in health and health care provision. Health inequality can be linked to social disadvantage, ethnicity or population demographics, such as age or gender, and while the overall health status of local population may seem reassuring, extensive effort is invested in identifying pockets of ill health and of inequitable provision of care.
