PacifiCorp began transporting adult spring Chinook to the upper basin on May 18, 2017, with the last fish being transported in early-August. A total of 1,110 adults were transported and release at head of Swift Reservoir during the 2017 run year. A number of these fish were observed spawning throughout the upper basin and as far upstream as Lower Falls this fall. These were the first spring Chinook adults to be released in the upper basin since 2013, when about 600 adults were released above Swift Reservoir. PacifiCorp began transporting early coho salmon to the upper basin on August 25, 2017. Xxxxxx Xxxx Collection Facility and General Operations. During the month of September, a total 4,923 fish were captured at the Xxxxxx Xxxx Collection Facility; the majority (62%) of these fish were early run coho (n = 3,059) and (34%) hatchery summer steelhead (n = 1,670). Of the 1,670 steelhead collected, 692 (14%) were fish previously captured at the Xxxxxx Sorting Facility, marked, and released back downstream as part of Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (WDFW) fish recycling program. Fifty-two wild fall Chinook were captured and returned to the lower river. All coded wire tagged (CWT) early run coho, hatchery summer steelhead, and adipose clipped fall Chinook were transported to Xxxxx River Fish Hatchery and processed by WDFW. Eight spring Chinook were collected during the month of September, which were transported to Speelyai Hatchery for broodstock. To date, 934 spring Chinook have been captured at the Xxxxxx Sorting Facility this year. Early run coho (n=3,062) and fall Chinook (n=131) counts began peaking in mid-September. The Xxxxxx Sorting Facility was non-operational 10 days during this month of operation due to mechanical interruptions which occurred on September 4th, 10th-15th, and September 26th-28th. The Auxiliary Water Supply (AWS) system, which can boost attraction flow up to 400 cfs, was operated daily with the addition of the Ladder Water Supply (LWS) approximately set for approximately 30cfs. River flow below Xxxxxx Dam remained constant at about 1,280 cfs during September. No spill events occurred. Discharge, cubic feet per second Upstream Transport A total 2,180 early run coho were collected from the Xxxxxx xxxx trap in September and transported upstream of Swift Dam. River flow varied below Xxxxxx Dam ranging between 2,790 and 6,030 cfs throughout the month. Discharge, cubic feet per second Upstream Transport (Attachment A) Nine Blank Wire Tag (BWT) winter steelhead were transported upstream above Swift Dam in December 2017. Two additional fish were transported earlier in the fall for a total of 11 BWT steelhead collected and transported in fall/winter 2017. Through April 2018, an additional 1,122 BWT winter steelhead were transported upstream for a total of 1,133 fish transported as part of the 2018 run year. Xxxxxxxxx gave a brief summary of the ongoing Xxxxxx Dam Adult Trap Efficiency (ATE) Study for winter steelhead. So far, a total of 92 fish have been tagged (19 trap naïve vs. 73 trap non- naïve). Of the 19 trap naïve fish tagged downstream, 16 have returned to Xxxxxx Dam and all have been recaptured (ATETEST = 100%). All but one of the 73 trap non-naïve fish rereleased downstream have returned to Xxxxxx Dam and 63 have been recaptured (ATETEST = 88%). Further statistical analysis is still pending. Monitoring and data collection is scheduled through June 2018, with the draft report issued for review in early fall. As of end of April 2018, no adult spring Chinook have been transported upstream as part of the 2018 run year so far. By the end of April, there were approximately 360 adult spring Chinook being held at Xxxxx River Hatchery. These fish may be taken upstream once the returning run has reached the historic 50% level (generally around the 3rd week in May). A decision on whether to transport some or all of these fish will be made at that time. Additional details regarding this decision process can be found in Section B - 2.2 in the draft 2018 Hatchery and Supplementation Annual Operating Plan (AOP). Swift Floating Surface...
Xxxxxx Xxxx Collection Facility and General Operations. (Attachment A) During the month of April, a total 856 fish were captured at the Xxxxxx Xxxx Collection Facility; the majority (76%) of these fish were blank wire tag (BWT) winter steelhead (n=654) followed by hatchery spring Chinook (n=119). All hatchery steelhead were transported to Xxxxx River Fish Hatchery and processed by WDFW. A total 72 of 654 BWT winter steelhead captured were radio tagged and returned downstream as part of the required Adult Trap Efficiency (ATE) study. The remainder of BWT winter steelhead were transported upstream in addition to one cutthroat trout and fifty-four recaptured radio tagged steelhead. Twenty-two wild winter steelhead, five wild spring Chinook, and one hundred-nineteen hatchery spring Chinook were captured and held for brood stock collection at Xxxxxx and Speelyai Fish Hatcheries. Daily operation of the Xxxxxx Xxxx Collection Facility were suspended on Friday, April 17 through and Sunday, April 19 due to a faulty limit switch that caused some minor mechanical damage to the fish xxxxxxx and lift system. The Xxxxxx Trap was returned to service on Monday, April 20. The Auxiliary Water Supply (AWS) system, which can boost attraction flow up to 400 cfs, was operated daily. The Ladder Water Supply (LWS) was operated daily throughout the month of April. River flow below Xxxxxx Dam ranged between approximately 2,370 cfs to 6,460 cfs during April. Discharge, cubic feet per second Upstream Transport (Attachment A) To date, 1,064 (642 m: 422 f) BWT winter steelhead have been transported and released upstream of Swift Reservoir (27 of which were captured via tangle net in the lower river as part of the Hatchery and Supplementation Plan Monitoring). In addition, seven cutthroat trout exceeding thirteen inches have been transported upstream of Swift Reservoir. In addition, Xxxxxxxxx reported about 8-10 winter steelhead are continuing to be caught a day, with summer steelhead starting to show up. We are still waiting on large numbers of spring Chinook to show up. No outages are anticipated, but will continue to communicate with the ACC as they come up. Xxxxxx Xxxx Collection Facility and General Operations. During the month of June, a total 929 fish were captured at the Xxxxxx Xxxx Collection Facility. The vast majority of these fish (93%) were summer steelhead while the few remaining comprised of both spring Chinook and winter steelhead. The Xxxxxx Trap ran continuously through the month of June except on June 14th when it was shut down for debris removal at the intake. PacifiCorp moved to a 5-day per week sorting schedule in June. Under these conditions, the fish lift and conveyance system remains operational seven (7) days a week, but fish are only sorted Monday through Friday. The trap will return to a seven (7) day per week sorting schedule once early-coho begin to arrive in August. The Auxiliary Water Supply (AWS) system, which can boost attraction flow up to 400 cfs, was operated daily in the month of June. River flow below Xxxxxx Dam remained at between approximately 2,700 and 2,300 cfs throughout the month of June. Discharge, cubic feet per second Upstream Transport For calendar year 2016, seven hundred sixty seven blank wire tag winter steelhead (three of which were captured at Xxxxx River Fish Hatchery), six hatchery coho (January 2016), and eight cutthroat trout greater than thirteen inches in length have been transported upstream.
