Plant Pathology Sample Clauses

Plant Pathology. The AREA Plant Pathology program seeks to improve the capacity of the Bas Xxxx CRDD to operate and maintain a functional plant disease diagnosis laboratory. This has been accomplished through staff training, improvements to the plant pathology lab area, the creation of an isolation room and the support of a lab technician. Also, AREA is surveying crops for plant diseases and identifying disease-causing organisms. As part of this effort, AREA is working to help identify the causal agent of a new toppling disease that has affected banana plants in Haiti and determine its distribution. AREA expects this research will lead to recommendations on methods to control the disease. Additionally, AREA is providing general training in plant diagnostics, plant disease management and risk assessment for Haitian agricultural professionals at Haiti’s Ministry of Agriculture and universities. Output 1: Provide pest and disease identification to farmers and develop management guidelines for dissemination to farmers and agricultural service (extension) providers During the quarter, AREA’s Haiti-based plant pathology technician and a plant pathologist continued to survey and diagnose plant diseases on the major food crops at the Bas Xxẍx CRDD and the surrounding region. However, plant diagnosis services were reduced starting in October because of limited electricity at the Bas Xxxx CRDD. Since electricity was reduced to one to two days per week, AREA informed the CRDD’s management that for reasons of safety and productivity AREA staff would not work at the center when electricity was unavailable. Instead, AREA arranged to perform diagnostic work at the Ministry of Agriculture’s Division of Plant Protection lab. Table 1 lists the samples collected and diagnosed at Bas Xxxx'x Plant Pathology Laboratory. The sampled crops included common bean, spinach, plantain and tomatoes. The table includes information about the diagnostic samples. Table 1. Plant samples analyzed during the first quarter. Plant Pathology. Sustain Ohio Grapevine Productivity by Surveying Virus and Phytoplasma Disease Damages to Vineyards Across the State. The goal of the proposed project is to determine for the first time the identities of common viruses and phytoplasmas present in Ohio grapevines, map their distributions across Ohio, and assess the severity of diseases caused by each of the viruses through a comprehensive field survey. Such a survey is needed in Ohio as virus and phytoplasma problems have already been found to cause serious yield losses to wine grapes in other states and areas, including California, Missouri, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. More importantly, the grapevine leafroll disease, caused by Grapevine leafroll-associated viruses (GLRaVs), was recently confirmed in two Ohio vineyards (Han, Elllis, and Qu, Plant Disease, 2014, in press). In addition, the grapevine yellows disease caused by phytoplasmas was also observed in a number of Ohio vineyards by Xx. Xxxx (unpublished). Finally, the risk of a new disease caused by Grapevine red blotch-associated virus (GRBaV), recently reported in California and New York, also warrants urgent assessment.
Plant Pathology. Background A key focus of the AREA Plant Pathology program is to improve the capacity of the Bas Xxxx CRDD and the Ministry of Agriculture to operate and maintain a functional plant diagnosis laboratory. AREA will provide diagnostic-related activities and extension documents in Haitian Creole related to plant disease management. In Year 4, the Ministry of Agriculture requested and received training in risk assessment, which AREA has provided in Year 5. Output 1: Provide pest and disease identification to farmers and develop management guidelines for dissemination to farmers and agricultural service (extension) providers On-going surveillance of diseases was terminated in March due to COVID-19 pandemic. AREA will talk with the Bas Xxxx CRDD to determine its plans for sustaining the plant pathology surveillance work in the future. The article entitled “Draft genome sequences of plant pathogenic Klebsiella variicola isolated from plantain in Haiti” was accepted for publication in the journal Microbiology Resource Announcements. Output 2: Technical training and outreach activities for personnel at CRDDs, Ministry of Agriculture and universities No additional trainings to report this quarter. Output 3: Strategic initiatives with the Ministry of Agriculture to address new plant pathogens AREA is completing a final report on pest risks in Haiti, which it will submit to a peer-review journal.

AREA will provide diagnostic-related activities and extension documents in Haitian Creole related to plant disease management. In Year 4, the Ministry of Agriculture requested and received training in risk assessment, which AREA will continue to do in Year 5. Output 1: Provide pest and disease identification to farmers and develop management guidelines for dissemination to farmers and agricultural service (extension) providers During the growing season, AREA team members began to regularly visit bean fields at the Bas Xxxx CRDD and on farms around the Plaine du Cul-de-Sac. AREA pathologists recommended preventive measures to control pests and diseases, including using disease-free seeds, optimal spacing of plants, eliminating weeds and regularly scouting the fields for diagnostic purposes. AREA supported the Bas Xxxx CRDD by providing pest and disease identification and management guidelines to farmers and students. Sampling was discontinued in March because of coronavirus restrictions. Table 1.
