Take Home Vehicle. The purpose of this policy is to outline the conditions under which police officers, specifically those who are part of the SWAT Team, on shift, or on-call, are permitted to take home police vehicles. This policy ensures that take-home vehicles are used efficiently and are readily available for urgent duties while considering cost and operational effectiveness. To qualify, officers must reside within a 30-mile radius of the police station, measured by the most direct driving route. Only officers who are members of the SWAT Team, those who are currently on shift, or those designated as on-call and living within the 30-mile radius, are eligible for the take-home vehicle policy. This ensures that officers who may need to respond quickly to emergencies have immediate access to a police vehicle. Supervisors are responsible for verifying the residence distance of officers and ensuring the policy is enforced consistently and fairly. Only authorized personnel may ride in a take-home vehicle; family members and other unauthorized individuals are strictly prohibited. Eligible officers must maintain the vehicle according to departmental guidelines and ensure it is always ready for use. Officers must sign a waiver agreeing to the items outlined in this policy. Officers are also responsible for promptly reporting any repairs or issues with the vehicle to prevent operational disruptions. Any exceptions to this policy must be approved in writing by the Police Chief or an authorized designee and will only be considered under extraordinary circumstances. This policy will be reviewed annually, and amendments will be made as necessary to adapt to changing operational needs and improve efficiency. Officers found in violation of this policy will face disciplinary actions according to departmental regulations.
