Work Package 6. KAB18 surveys among selected target groupsThe cooperation under this WP was planned to start in January and to be ended in December 2006. Preparatory negotiations for the underlying research tasks had been set to work already in October 2005 during the 2nd ISC meeting in Bratislava (SK). The objective of this WP was to elaborate further understanding about substantial factors that influence risk exposure and health-related behaviour in the context of HIV/STIs. This was achieved with the help of KAB surveys among two selected target groups in each model region. The KAB surveys shed light upon the background living and social conditions, knowledge and attitudes related to HIV/STIs; risk exposure and management with regard to HIV/STIs. A further area of research interest was the cross-border mobility, thus outlining risk indicators based on the links between sexual risks and patterns of transnational mobility. The leading partner, the project coordinator SPI Forschung gGmbH, was responsible for developing, conducting, evaluation and report writing on the KAB surveys within BORDERNET. Their design, sample, instruments (D32) and detailed research protocol were developed out and agreed upon in the first project year (see 1st interim technical report, March 2006). The administration of the surveys in 2006, the modification of the samples and the data set (D 33) have all been presented in the 2nd interim report (March 2007). The report findings have become objects of two extended research reports (D35), namely the KAB survey among young people (available in English and German) and the KAB survey among MSM (available in English). The current section of the final technical report summarises the completed tasks under this WP and the main report findings. The outcomes of the cooperation are four KAB surveys among around 1.700 persons from six countries. The partner consultations in 2005 decided on young people as the most important target group in each region, thus allowing for cross-country comparisons among the six EU countries. Three further specific target groups were outlined by diverse regions, MSM (MRIII and MRIV), female sex workers (MRII) and HIV-positive men (MRI). Thus the young people between 18 and 25 years old were questioned in all BORDERNET countries, the men who have sex with men in Austria, Slovakia, Italy and Slovenia, the female sex workers and the HIV-positive men in Germany and Poland.
