Bargaining Unit Member Self-Improvement. Section 1 The parties support the principle of continuing education for Bargaining Unit Members and participation by Bargaining Unit Members in their professional organizations.
Section 2 When an employee seeks to upgrade his/her skills by taking courses or participating in in-service activities (including seminars and conferences) outside of his/her normal workday, he/she will be reimbursed by the Board of Education for their hourly rate times number of hours of the training, fees and materials required to a maximum of $300 per course and/or in-service. To be eligible the employee must receive prior approval from the Director of Human Resources and provide the district with proof of satisfactory completion. Three thousand dollars ($3,000) shall be allocated during each year of this Agreement for this purpose and an amount up to one thousand dollars ($1,000) of any unused funds shall be carried forward from one year to the next. An employee is not eligible for a second reimbursement during the same contractual year until all first requests have been honored and then only to the extent that funds are available. BEAP shall receive notification of all activities regarding this account. Reimbursement of expenses, including salary and mileage, associated with Board required participation in similar activities during the employee’s normal workday shall not be charged against this account.
Section 3 The Board shall provide training to each paraeducator whose job entails unique or specialized training. Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) training will be required training for all paraeducators. The Director of Student Services will assess and determine paraeducator professional development in these areas quarterly. Such training shall occur during normal working hours and not be charged to the employee’s personal leave day bank.
Section 4 The Board shall provide two (2) three hour workshops per year for paraeducator professional development. These workshops shall occur on district-wide seminar days and will cover issues/topics that will enhance paraeducator skill/knowledge levels. The District and BEAP shall make every attempt to meet on or before August 1 to plan the workshops for the subsequent school year. Bargaining Unit Member Self-Improvement. 1. The Board may provide in-service training to part-time and full-time employees. Employees shall be paid for such time spent in in-service training.
2. Mandatory classes held after the regular work day will be compensated at the rate of time and one-half (1 ½ ) for those who qualify for overtime.

B. Upon prior approval of the Superintendent or his designee, any Bargaining Unit Member who enrolls in, and successfully completes courses related to his/her responsibilities at an accredited college or university or supported by the Board, shall receive reimbursement from the Board for seventy-five (75%) of tuition.
C. Upon prior approval of the Superintendent or his designee, the Board shall provide funds to permit Bargaining Unit Members to attend selected professional conferences/training related to their specific present assignment with full expenses paid by the Board.
D. If at any time, presently employed bargaining unit members are required by law and/or state mandated agency, to have additional training, it shall be at the district's expense.

17.2 Any Association member who is required by the Board to complete a course of study related to his/her responsibilities at an accredited college, university, or other institution, shall receive reimbursement from the Board for tuition, books, supplies, meals, lodging and transportation expense.

B. Any Bargaining Unit Member who enrolls in, and successfully completes a course related to his/her responsibilities at an accredited college or university or supported by the Board shall receive full reimbursement from the Board for tuition, books, supplies, meals, lodging and transportation expenses. This section is subject to Board approval based upon the course’s applicability to the Bargaining Member’s responsibility in the District.
C. The Board shall provide funds to permit a minimum of six (6) Bargaining Unit Members to attend three (3) professional conferences with full expenses paid by the Board. It shall be necessary for the Bargaining Unit Member to be a member of the organization conducting said conference. The Board upon its own discretion may choose to send more than six (6) persons to more than three (3) conferences.
D. Any Bargaining Unit Member Teaching Assistant who takes the appropriate testing to become “Highly Qualified” as provided for under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), shall have his/her cost of tests reimbursed as follows: test charges to be reimbursed are defined as the first such test taken, and the next such test that assistant passes, if not passed the first time. Further, such assistants shall be granted paid release time to take such tests upon request.
E. The District and the Association shall agree upon and/or develop the Charlevoix Academic Assessment for Title 1 Paraprofessionals. The local assessment will fulfill the requirements of the Elementary and Secondary Education Assessment Act (ESEA) (20USC 6319(c)).
F. If a Paraprofessional has been determined by another school district or by the Michigan Department of Education as meeting the requirements of the ESEA, then s/he shall be considered by the district as meeting the requirements.
G. For current paraprofessionals electing to meet the requirements of the ESEA through an academic assessment, training as approved by the Superintendent shall be provided and paid by the district at the employee’s regular hourly rate.
H. An employee who is subject to the requirements of the ESEA who is unable to meet the requirements by the deadline established by the law shall be laid off by the district with recall rights as established under Article XIV hereunder.
Bargaining Unit Member Self-Improvement. 1. The Board may provide in-service training to part-time and full-time employees. Employees shall be paid for such time actually spent in sessions conducted by the trainer at in-service training meetings or conferences. Expenses associated with such pre-approved, out-of-district conference attendance may be, but is not limited to, mileage, meals, registrations, lodgings, and wages equal to their regularly-scheduled hours or actual hours spent in training, although no employee shall be compensated for greater than eight (8) hours. All compensation shall be at the employee's regular pay rate. No overtime shall be paid. Whenever possible, employees will make their immediate supervisor aware of their anticipated expenses prior to the training, conference, or in-service.
2. Mandatory classes held after the regular work day will be compensated at the rate of time and one-half (1 1/2) for those who qualify for overtime.
3. When an in-service is scheduled during the workday of the employee, and the employee is not required to attend, the employee may use accumulated excused leave to compensate for any hours lost.

17.2 Any Association member who is required by the Board to complete a course of study related to his/her responsibilities at an accredited college, university, or other institution, shall receive reimbursement from the Board for tuition, books, supplies, meals, lodging and transportation expense.
17.3 Due to the safety for, and security of, our school community, the District will provide to members yearly training, by a certified trainer, regarding First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

6 B. Any Association member who is asked to complete a course of study related to his/her 7 responsibilities at an accredited college, university, or other institution shall receive full 8 reimbursement from the Board for tuition, books and laboratory fees.
9 C. Tuition will be waived for Gogebic Community College offered courses for all MESPA 10 members in good standing, their spouses, and dependent children, as defined by the IRS. In 11 the event that the course is not completed with a passing grade, the tuition will be paid to 12 the college by the MESPA member within 1 year. Procedures surrounding this policy will be 13 established by the College. Auditing of a course does not qualify for this. 1 ARTICLE 19
