CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS/ACADEMIC FREEDOM. ‌ A. The District believes that controversial issues are a part of the District's instructional program when related to subject matter in a given grade level or specific curricular field. Employees will use professional judgment in determining the appropriateness of the issue to the curriculum and the maturity of the students. B. In the presentation of all controversial issues, every effort will be made to affect a balance of biases, divergent points of view, and opportunity for exploration by the students into all sides of the issue. C. In discussing controversial issues, the employee will encourage students to express their own views, assuring that it be done in a manner that gives due respect to one an other’s rights and opinions. When discussing controversial issues, the employee will respect positions other than their own. Students will be encouraged, after class discussions and independent inquiry, to reach their own conclusions regarding controversial issues.

Objectives of the unit must be presented to the students for review by parents and students. If the parents request in writing that their student be allowed to be absent from a particular period or unit of work, the student will be allowed to go to an appropriate alternative to be provided for the student. D. Both sides must be presented by the employee when dealing with controversial subjects. E. Notification of all guest speakers or presenters must be provided to the principal for approval.

Employees shall be free to present instructional materials, to interpret facts and ideas concerning human society, the physical and biological world and other branches of learning subject to employees using professional judgment to determine the appropriateness of the issue to the curriculum and the maturity of students. In the use of instructional materials, employees shall follow the instructional materials policy of the District. A copy of this policy will be made available to all employees. Clearly questionable matters concerning the appropriateness of the issue to the curriculum and the maturity of the students shall be referred to the principal for consultation and action. All employees shall enjoy the right to pursue academic study and investigation free from interference and restraint. B. In the presentation and discussion of all controversial issues, the employee shall make every effort to effect an objective balance of biases, divergent points of view, and afford an opportunity for exploration by the students into all sides of the issues. In discussing controversial issues, students shall be encouraged to express their own views, to respect one another's rights and opinions, and to reach their own conclusions.

  • ACADEMIC FREEDOM Academic freedom shall be guaranteed to all employees, and no special limitation shall be placed upon study, investigation, presentation and interpretation of facts and ideas concerning man, human society, the physical and biological world, and other branches of learning subject to accepted standards of professional responsibility, community standards, and District-approved curriculum.
