Learning and Taking Part. The CPP’s recent 2008 governance review has resulted in the merging of the lifelong learning and social and economic development agendas (previously led by the CPP’s Lifelong Learning and Social and Economic Development Thematic Groups) into a new integrated ‘Economic and Learning Partnership’. This recognises the increasingly cross- cutting nature of key issues such as skills and the needs of the More Choices, More Chances Group (young people not in education, employment or training). Ambition for our children and young people starts in the Early Years, providing a foundation for learning and promoting confidence and self esteem. In line with national policy, Children’s Services is committed to further development of the existing, quality range of early education and childcare services in North Ayrshire. Increasing levels of attainment and achievement continues to be an essential part of the Learning and Taking Part agenda in North Ayrshire, not just for schools, but across all learning opportunities. As well as more traditional attainment, there is a renewed emphasis on schools developing the wider, flexible skills young people will require in the future such as thinking skills (through the roll out of “Critical Skills” and “Lets Encourage Thinking”) and social and emotional literacy skills (through the “Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies” curriculum) in our primary schools and early years establishments. Curriculum for Excellence is a programme of transformational change in Scottish education, which aims to support all our children and young people to be confident individuals, successful learners, effective contributors and responsible citizens, by providing a coherent, more flexible and enriched curriculum for children and young people aged 3 - 18. North Ayrshire Council is committed to ensuring the opportunities that CfE affords are fully realised. It will work with partners to develop a coherent, strategic approach to local implementation, with a clear plan of action to ensure that the programme is delivered locally. Promoting inclusion for children and young people with Additional Support Needs is an important part of the ‘Learning and Taking Part’ agenda, and also demonstrates some strong areas of partnership working.
