Permanent Substitutes. Permanent teacher substitutes, possessing a valid Michigan teacher certificate for the position, who shall be employed in a continuing singular assignment for a period of ninety-five (95) working days and hired before April 1st of each year shall become members of the bargaining unit on the ninety-fifth (95) day of their employment. The Board shall retroactively on a prorated basis provide leave benefits to the employed permanent substitute upon establishment of bargaining unit status. Insurance and/or other economic provisions shall not be retroactive.
Permanent Substitutes. A route that will be vacant for three (3) days or greater will have a substitute assigned to that route until either the permanent driver returns or the vacancy is filled. This assignment will not interfere with bid trips. The substitute assigned will be available for that route for the duration of the vacancy.

Definition of Permanent Sub - A Sub that is present daily (180 days) and receives benefits including sick and personal leave. They are permanently assigned to a school for the year. The principal has the right to assign their duties each day. Definition of a Dedicated Sub - A sub that can report to a building each student attendance day at a special rate. No benefits are provided, but they get a higher rate because they dedicate themselves to that school. The principal has the right to assign their duties each day they are in attendance.

Permanent Substitutes. Permanent Substitutes shall be defined as any employee temporarily hired to fill a vacancy for a period of at least sixty (60) consecutive school days in a bargaining unit position. Permanent Substitutes shall be covered by all provisions of this Contract, except for Article XII, Reduction in Force, and shall, unless otherwise provided in this Agreement, enjoy all rights, benefits, duties, and responsibilities of the Contract. Notwithstanding the previous sentence, permanent substitutes will only be covered by the provisions of Article XII, if, in addition to having served in a position for more than sixty (60) consecutive work days, they have also been appointed to the position by the Superintendent of Schools. When employing a permanent substitute, if the Committee knows in advance that the substitute will work more than sixty (60) consecutive workdays, then the employees hired will begin to receive all contractual benefits upon hire, if certified. If the employee is not certified, then the employee will receive all contractual benefits except for salary. Salary will be paid at the rate of $100.00 per day until the employee obtains certification or a waiver of certification. Once certified or functioning under a waiver of certification, full salary, in accordance with proper placement on the Salary Schedule, will be paid retroactively to the date of employment to the employee. If the employee fails to obtain certification or a waiver of certification within ninety (90) workdays of employment, the employee may be immediately terminated. Notwithstanding the above, failure by an employee to obtain certification or a waiver of certification will not result in termination for events not within the control of the employee.
Permanent Substitutes. 8.4.1.1 If there is a need for permanent substitute teachers and there are not volunteers, teachers with the least district seniority will be reassigned to these positions.
