Sick Leave and Doctor’s Notes. The General Manager or his designated representative, may make provision for a physician with the proper qualifications, other than the employee’s family doctor, to make examination at the Town’s expense. An acceptable medical certificate signed by a licensed physician or other practitioner, whose method of healing is recognized by the State of Connecticut, will be required of an employee to substantiate a request for sick leave for the following reasons:
(a) For any period of absence in excess of four (4) consecutive shifts.
(b) For leave of any duration of absence from duty which recurs frequently or habitually, provided that the employee has been notified that a certificate will be required.
(c) When evidence indicates reasonable cause required such a certificate.
(d) To support a request for sick leave on a day which the employee had previously requested to use vacation, personal leave, or earned time, and the request had been denied. Excluding emergency situations, prior to implementing (b), (c), or (d) above, the Fire Chief or his designee shall meet with the Union President to discuss the Department concerns and give the Union a reasonable period of time to work with the employee to correct the deficiencies.

Section 14.1 An employee shall be granted leave of absence with pay for the following reasons listed below. Whenever possible, absences for any such purposes must be approved by the Fire Chief in advance.
