COGNITION. Three of the four tasks that were employed make up part of the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB, PAR, Inc FL 33549) (exception: Digit span). Alternative versions of each task were used across the three different conditions, (baseline, post- capsule, post-∆9-THC), except for symbol-coding. All participants encountered each version in a consistent order. For each of the three conditions, cognitive tasks were presented in the following sequence (under ∆9-THC conditions, cognitive testing began at 40 min post-∆9-THC injection). The Xxxxxxx Verbal Learning Task-Revised (verbal learning and memory) In the Xxxxxxx Verbal Learning Task-Revised (HVLT-R) (Appendix IV), participants are tested in their immediate recall of 12 words (nouns from three taxonomic categories) after each of three learning trials. Here, delayed recall was assessed 20–25 min after the final learning trial. Symbol coding (processing speed) This is a timed pencil-and-paper task in which participants are required to translate a symbol into a corresponding digit (1–9), whilst a reference key of symbol/digit pairs remains visible (Appendix V). Digit-span forward and reverse (working memory) The digit span task (forward-condition) (Appendix VI) evaluates the capacity of working memory. Participants are tested for immediate recall of a sequence of digits; and given two attempts at each level of difficulty. In the reverse digit span condition, participants are required to recall the sequence in the reverse order, which places additional processing demands on working memory.
COGNITION. Scores on the cognitive battery at baseline, post-CBD/placebo, and post-∆9-THC are shown in Table 2.4. Table 2.4. Under ∆9-THC (IV 1.5 mg) conditions, cognitive performance was generally poorer, except for the Symbol coding and NAB-MAZES tasks. ∆9-THC-elicited deficits in delayed recall were inhibited by CBD (600 mg po). The Xxxxxxx Verbal Learning Task Immediate recall There was a main effect of CONDITION (F=22.64, p<0.000) but no effect of GROUP (F=0.079, p=0.78) and no interactive CONDITION×GROUP effects (F=0.92, p=0.88). Immediate recall was poorer following ∆9-THC, regardless of group. Post-hoc analysis revealed differences between post-∆9-THC and baseline performance, significantly in the placebo group (p<0.005), and at the level of a trend in the CBD group (p=0.06). Differences between post-∆9-THC and post-capsule performance were significant in the CBD group (p<0.000) and the placebo group (p<0.005). Following ∆9-THC, immediate recall was 2.9 (±5.3) and 3.6 (±4.5) items fewer in the CBD and placebo groups, respectively, compared with baseline, a non-significant between-groups difference (p=0.6), (Figure 2.4(a)).

COGNITION. School culture. Students are immersed daily in a school culture that emphasizes learning for its own sake (rather than for a grade, for example). This school culture has resulted in a student body that collectively demonstrates positive approaches to learning, motivation, engagement, all evidenced by an extensive record of academic achievement. - Culture of leisure and play. Students are afforded daily supervised play time in P.E. and recess, as well as in-class leisure time. This provides frequent opportunities for students to engage in dramatic play, to explore and imagine and invent. - Core Knowledge science. Students are regularly instructed in classification skills in the context of science class, specifically: classifying plants and animals, the parts of the human body, and types of weather. - Core Knowledge Studio Art. Students are regularly instructed in symbolic and imagistic representation in Studio Art. - Singapore Math. Students have rigorous Singapore Math daily. This curriculum specifically teaches students to identify all possible strategies for solving a given problem. - Cognition assessment. Within the first 60 calendar days of the school year, students are assessed on their cognitive development. Assessments are reflected in quarterly checklist evaluations and in lengthy narrative evaluations each semester. 5.
COGNITION. Since Xxxxxxxxx’x definition of dementia praecox, cognitive impairment has been considered as a core feature of schizophrenia, and subsequently extended to whole psychotic spectrum as an important pathognomonic characteristic. Cognitive deficits are indeed widespread, yet with different degrees, across psychotic disorders, with a more severe impairment found in schizophrenia than affective psychosis (XxXxxxxx & Xxxxxxxxxxxx, 2019; Xxxxxxx et al., 2010). Patients with psychosis tend to present lower IQ and show impairment in specific cognitive domains, such as processing speed, working and long-term memory, attention, executive function, and social cognition than non-psychotic controls (Bora et al., 2009). A body of literature has shown evidence that cognitive deficits are already present by the time of first- episode, among ultra-high risk (UHR) individuals for psychosis, and to a lesser degree among non-affected first-degree relatives of psychotic patients, thus representing indicators of vulnerability for the illness. Indeed, it has been suggested that cognitive impairment may serve as an endophenotype or intermediary phenotype (Xxxxxxx et al., 2016; Xxxxx et al., 2014). Twin and GWAS studies have found a significant genetic overlap between cognition and schizophrenia (Xxxxxxx et al., 2016; XxXxxxxx et al., 2013; Xxxxxxxxxxx et al., 2007, 2019); providing evidence for deficits in general cognitive ability and in specific domains - such as working memory - as intermediary phenotype in psychotic disorders (Xxxx & Xxxxxxxxxxx, 2016; Park & Xxxxxxx, 2014).
COGNITION. All residents had a physician’s diagnosis of dementia and resided in a psychogeriatric unit. Studies 1, 2, 3 and 5 (Table 1) included staff assessment using the Bedford Alzheimer Nursing Severity-Scale (BANS-S) to measure the severity of the dementia in the months before death. BANS-S scores range from 7 to 28. A score of 17 or higher represents severe dementia.33, 34 In studies 1 to 5, staff assessed whether residents were fully dependent in eating. Full eating dependence indicates very severe cognitive impairment and is equal to the highest level of impairment on the Cognitive Performance Scale (CPS 6).35, 36 Trend analysis The EOLD-SWC and EOLD-CAD scores in the combined dataset were analysed with mixed models, using time of death relative to the first death in the first study as the independent variable. The models included random effects for season (as seasonality in cause of death might vary between years) and for clustering of residents within nursing homes. 37, 38 In study 7, only the month of death was available due to privacy regulations, and we imputed the 14th for February and the 15th for other months. We provide 95% confidence intervals around the estimate for time. Models were adjusted for characteristics of residents (age and gender), and family caregivers (gender, relationship to resident), region (urbanised Western and central region Table 1 Overview of datasets combined for trend analyses on quality of care and quality of dying Study Main reference for study/ included in early combined analyses Period Design Number of nursing homes, area in Netherlands
