COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION. An important finding of the Compact research process was the need for increased information and better communication between the Council and voluntary and community sector organisations. There was recognition of positive initiatives that have been taken. Examples of increased contact and liaison with Council members and officers were noted and valued by several voluntary and community organisations. The work of the Council's Community Sector Unit was praised highly by many organisations. The role of VAL as a key provider of information was noted and praised by many Council officers and members. Alongside this there was a strong feeling within voluntary and community organisations that continued efforts need to be made to enable Council members and officers to achieve greater understanding of their nature, the constraints within which they operate, or the detail of the services they offer. Many organisations expressed the wish that Council officers would visit them more often to see the work in progress, and requested better information about Council structures and procedures. Equally, many Council officers identified the need for voluntary and community organisations to have greater knowledge and understanding of the workings of the Council and to acknowledge more fully the statutory requirements and legal constraints which the Council is obliged to satisfy. There was a recognition that their own lack of detailed knowledge of the many different voluntary and community organisations in the Borough means that, for example, consultation is sometimes less comprehensive than is ideal. There was agreement among both sectors that work needs to be undertaken to improve this situation and the Compact was seen as a useful mechanism within which issues can be tackled. A number of broad undertakings and actions with regard to communication and information are included below. Further undertakings and actions, which relate specifically to improving communication and information within Partnership, Consultation, Premises or Funding, are included in sections 5-8 of the Compact. Undertakings The Council and voluntary and community organisations will ♦ Create opportunities for Council members and officers and voluntary and community organisations' representatives to meet together to increase understanding and address issues of mutual concern. ♦ Use straightforward language in written documents, explain abbreviations and acronyms, and seek to avoid jargon.
