Extracurricular and Field Trips. The Superintendent’s designee will make all extracurricular and field trips assignments within the following guidelines: 1. Bus drivers will be asked to sign up on separate lists for in-town and out-of-town field trips at the beginning of each semester. Drivers may sign up for one or both types of trips. The Superintendent’s designee will match the available field trips for each upcoming assignment period, typically a week, considering route times and off-duty requirements, with drivers. The names of drivers will be matched with the field trips for each assignment period in a rolling alphabetical order, on list with start with A and move forward and the other list will start with Z and move backward to prevent conflicts. If a driver refuses a trip, the next driver will be offered the trip, alphabetical order will continue. 2. Full-time school bus drivers employed by the Board shall have priority in applying for extracurricular and field trip assignments to be made during the drivers’ off-duty hours or when a permanent substitute is available, except when the coach or club sponsor of that team or club volunteers to drive before the trip is assigned to an employee, resulting in no cost to the district, club or athletic program. At least once each year, a teacher or coach shall be assigned a trip (which may be a regular bus route) to ensure they continue to meet the qualifications to maintain their license to drive a school bus. 3. Drivers may not drive after having been on duty for fifteen (15) hours, following eight (8) consecutive hours off duty. Off-duty time is not included in the fifteen (15) hour period. 4. Daily shuttle trips which can normally be completed within the minimum work day of a driver are considered to be a part of the assigned daily route and will not be counted as extracurricular or field trips.

Drivers that consistently take trips that are offered to them shall have priority over those that refuse assignment of trips. 2. Full-time school bus drivers employed by the Board shall have priority in applying for extracurricular and field trip assignments to be made during the drivers’ off-duty hours or when a permanent substitute is available, except when the coach or club sponsor of that team or club volunteers to drive before the trip is assigned to an employee, resulting in no cost to the district, club or athletic program. At least once each year, a teacher or coach shall be assigned a trip (which may be a regular bus route) to ensure they continue to meet the qualifications to maintain their license to drive a school bus. 3. Drivers will not be assigned to work more than 40 hours per week, including the assigned daily route and all other trips, unless approved by the Superintendent. 4. The Superintendent’s designee will make a reasonable attempt to assign trips in a manner which balances the amount of accrued hours for extracurricular and field trips for those drivers who consistently take trips that are offered to them. 5. Daily shuttle trips which can normally be completed within the minimum work day of a driver are considered to be a part of the assigned daily route and will not be counted as extracurricular or field trips.

If a driver is on authorized leave, he/she can contact the Transportation Supervisor during the designated time to make his/her selection. These trips shall be offered on a rotation basis to all regular and substitute drivers. If a trip is canceled, the driver who was assigned that trip will be put at the top of the next week's trip rotation. Any driver who opts for a field trip or extracurricular trip will have that portion of their regular route that would place him/her in excess of forty (40) hours that week preempted, unless the overtime is one (1) hour or less and paying overtime is determined by the District to be less disruptive than preempting another route. Drivers may suggest convenient days or runs for preemption opportunities. Late arriving trip requests, trips that no one has volunteered to take, and trips vacated due to authorized leave will be posted HOT and assigned by the Transportation Supervisor pursuant to Section 4.1. Regular routes receive priority. If a driver's regular route is preempted for a trip, and the trip was canceled, or if no substitute can be found for the regular route the driver will be required to drive the regular route and will be paid according to his or her contract time for that week.
