Raising public participation and awareness. As noted in the previous section, one of the four targeted euCognition activities is dedicated exclusively to outreach to the community at large, embracing both inter-project collaboration and the involvement of new blood from both academia and industry, but also encompassing efforts to reach the general public. As set out in Section 7Detailed Implementation Plan – the Outreach activity includes four tasks dedicated to raising public participation and awareness. These are:
Raising public participation and awareness. Get the operational people aware of CYCLOPS and its future developments is essential, as they can relay information and disseminate such knowledge in their different working environment. Therefore, it is envisaged to generate a module for increasing awareness of the operational community, which could be released during the end users training sessions or included in the instructional material with the support of end user training authorities.
Raising public participation and awareness. In SELFMAN we intend to push a variety of techniques for public participation and awareness. The project participants will help in developing dissemination material that can be used for communication towards the general public. We intend to develop a video demonstrating the results of the project, by having articles about the project in local newspapers, featuring the benefits of the research carried out for the community reading the newspaper, or contributing to the development of public relations and state-of-the-art brochures. We intend to target activities such as national science fairs, small industry forums, educational institutes, expositions in public libraries, and technological museums to present popularized versions of the work. We consider that self management has a natural public appeal, because it leads to systems that have a more “life-like” or “proactive” behavior. This ties in to the public thirst for new and innovative technologies.
Raising public participation and awareness. The project has a natural interface appealing to laypersons: society modelling as whole and the envisioned challenges are easy to understand without a scientific background. This fact forms a good basis for approaching a wide audience. The project will invest targeted effort in contacting journalists and have them publicising the general philosophy behind the project, as well as the specific project objectives, and achievements. Additionally to the intra-project newsletter, a project presentation extended with an annual publicity document for laypersons will be presented on the project website and distributed to a mailing list of public media persons.
