Section 9.4. Bereavement Leave establishes an employee's right to take time off from work following the death of a close family member or loved one. Typically, this clause outlines the amount of paid or unpaid leave available, eligibility criteria, and any required documentation, such as a death certificate or notice. Section 9.4. Bereavement Leave. Up to five (5) days bereavement leave may be granted in the event of a death in the “Immediate 22 Household” or “Immediate Family” as defined in Section 9.1.1. Bereavement leave of one (1) day will be 23 granted for a person within the “Not Immediate Family” as defined in Section 9.1.1. 24 Bereavement leave shall not be cumulative.
Section 9.4. Bereavement Leave leave is intended to provide time for the employee to attend to matters related to the 31 death of individuals as outlined below:

Bereavement Leave. 10 Each employee shall be entitled to a maximum of five (5) days of leave with pay per occurrence for an 11 absence caused by the death of an employee’s child, spouse, sibling, parent, grandparent, grandchild, 12 aunt or uncle, niece or nephew, the like relationships to the employee’s spouse and any person living in 13 the employee’s household. Step relationships will also be included. Leave including close friends and 14 associates shall be one (1) day. Such leave, when granted, will be used for necessary travel, funeral 15 arrangements and/or attendance at the service. Bereavement leave is not deducted from any other 16 leave, nor is it cumulative. Exceptions to this provision may be granted by the Superintendent with the 17 leave being deducted from sick leave.
Section 9.4. Bereavement Leave. 21 Employees may be granted a leave of absence with pay of not more than five (5) days per occasion 22 when the absence is occasioned by the death of a father, mother, parent substitute, brother, sister, 23 brother-in-law, sister-in-law, spouse, parent of spouse, grandparent, children, grandchildren, or 24 dependent relative residing in the household of the employee of the District. Additional days may be 25 granted by the Superintendent or designee under unusual conditions. Such leave shall be left at the 26 discretion of the employee, to be taken without pay, or deducted from sick leave.

One day of bereavement leave 14 may be used for a co-worker or friend, limited to two (2) occurrences per year. Bereavement leave is 15 non-cumulative and must be approved by the Superintendent or designee. Bereavement leave is not 16 deducted from sick leave.

Additional days shall be subtracted from sick leave or if an employee’s sick 24 leave bank has been exhausted, the employee shall be granted leave without pay. (Family is defined as 25 wife, husband, father, mother, parent substitute, son, daughter, brother, sister, mother-in-law, father-in- 26 law, grandmother, grandfather, ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, 27 grandparents-in-law, uncle, aunt.) 29 Employees shall be granted two (2) days leave of absence with pay when absence is occasioned by the 30 death of a nephew, ▇▇▇▇▇, cousin or close friend. Additional days shall be subtracted from sick leave or if 31 an employee’s sick leave bank has been exhausted, the employee shall be granted leave without pay.

Such bereavement leave shall 2 not be deducted from sick leave. Bereavement leave is non-cumulative.
Section 9.4. Bereavement Leave. 3 Absences for bereavement may be granted for the following reasons: 5 A. Death in immediate family (defined as spouse, siblings(s), children, parents, parents-in-law, 6 and grandparents). 7 8 B. Absence for bereavement shall be of sufficient duration to allow the employee time to travel to 9 and from the place of service and to conduct necessary business while there. The length of 10 absence is to be agreed upon by the employee and the Superintendent; however, this time shall 11 not exceed ten (10) days per year. Under extenuating circumstances of multiple deaths in one 12 year, this leave may be extended beyond the ten (10) days limit with authorization of the 13 Superintendent. Additional leave beyond the ten (10) day limit will be requested in writing 14 prior to the extension. 16 C. One (1) or more days of this leave may be authorized by the Superintendent for the death of 17 relatives such as uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, first cousins, employees, members of 18 employee(s) families, and students. 20 Bereavement leave is non-cumulative and is not chargeable to sick leave.
