The City of Lincoln and Lancaster County requests $20,000 to hire a Welcoming Coordinator to oversee the implementation of key components of our strategic welcoming plan. In April 2021, the Gateways for Growth Planning Committee convened a Steering Committee, representing diverse stakeholders, to provide data and feedback on the community’s priorities related to immigrant and refugee inclusion and belonging. From this community-driven process, Steering Committee members developed a series of recommendations for community-wide policies and programs to better support immigrant and refugee community members in Lincoln/Lancaster County. Specifically, the recommendations are to address issues impacting the Lincoln/Lancaster County immigrant and refugee communities, identify barriers to equitable access and participation, and to ensure the full belonging of immigrants and refugees in our community. While the recommendations are divided into six focus areas, including: equitable access, civil engagement and community connections, education, economic opportunity, safe and healthy communities, and affordable and quality housing, there are overarching themes that resonate throughout all areas. In particular, the desire for consistent City/County ability to receive and respond to community input, as well as increased City/County commitment to implement and consistently prioritize diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging work throughout the community was highlighted in all six focus areas - so much so that committing to equitable access recommendations to have City/County teams and a funded City/County Welcoming Coordinator. This Welcoming Coordinator will lead and coordinate the implementation of recommended efforts, build capacity, serve as a liaison, and assess the impact and accountability of these and complimentary welcoming recommendations and strategies. The Welcoming Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing the implementation plan. This includes biweekly meetings with the leadership team and monthly meetings with the Steering Committee. This position will be responsible for prioritizing recommendations, developing a detailed work plan to implement these recommendations, and collecting data and outcome measures...
