The Incremental Salary Progression clause establishes a structured system for increasing an employee’s salary over time, typically based on factors such as length of service, performance, or achievement of specific milestones. In practice, this clause may outline a schedule of salary increments, such as annual raises or step increases, and specify the criteria employees must meet to qualify for each increment. Its core function is to provide transparency and predictability in compensation, incentivizing employee retention and performance while ensuring fairness in salary advancement.
INCREMENTAL SALARY PROGRESSION. 18.1 Incremental salary progression is the movement of an employee’s salary to the next highest salary point (or increment) within the employee’s current classification level in recognition of the employee’s acquisition of new skills, experience and knowledge. Supervisors will provide reasonable assistance and opportunity to employees to achieve incremental salary progression, but such advancement is not automatic and will primarily depend on the employee’s satisfactory performance over each twelve-month period of employment.
18.2 An employee appointed to a continuing or fixed-term appointment will be eligible for incremental progression if the employee:
18.2.1 is in receipt of a salary that is less than the maximum step for the employee’s classification level; and
18.2.2 has concluded twelve months’ continuous service with the University following the later of either:
i) entry into the classification level (via appointment, promotion or reclassification to the relevant level); or
ii) the most recent incremental salary progression.
18.3 The date upon which the achievement of twelve months continuous service occurs (in accordance with sub- clause 18.2.2) will be referred to as the anniversary date.
18.4 Movement of the next salary point within the level will occur only when the employee has, over the preceding twelve-months:
18.4.1 participated in a staff development/performance review in accordance with the University policy on Performance Review and Development Program;
18.4.2 acquired and used additional skills, experience and knowledge within the ambit of the classification level and in accordance with the priorities of the organisational unit; and
18.4.3 performed satisfactorily against agreed performance objectives and/or the appropriate classification level and the position description.
18.5 Movement to the next highest salary point will be effective from the anniversary date.
18.6 Where determination of sub-clause 18.4 is delayed, the anniversary date will not be changed and any increase in salary will be paid retrospectively to the anniversary date unless:
18.6.1 the employee has refused to participate appropriately in the University-designated Performance Review and Development Program;
18.6.2 the delay is related to the acquisition of new skills, experience and knowledge in accordance with sub-clause 18.4.2, in which case the date of acquisition will be the effective date;

INCREMENTAL SALARY PROGRESSION. 14.1 Increments will be awarded in accordance with the provisions of clause 19.
14.2 Language Instructors other than casual Language Instructors will progress from one salary level to the next salary level annually, up to the maximum salary level allowed, provided that their performance has been assessed as satisfactory.
14.3 Where a Language Instructor on a fixed term contract has their appointment renewed for a further term, the employee will be eligible for an incremental increase according to the agreed scale.
14.4 Employees will be entitled to apply for increased incremental remuneration on the basis of acquisition of additional relevant professional qualifications and experience.
INCREMENTAL SALARY PROGRESSION. 24.1 Incremental progression through the salary structure within a classification requires the staff member’s acquisition of new skills, experience, knowledge and satisfactory performance against an agreed Statement of Expectations. Supervisors will provide reasonable assistance and opportunity to staff members to achieve salary progression.
24.2 A staff member is eligible to be paid at the next salary step within the relevant level on the anniversary of commencement, subject to: • 12 months continuous service in the case of annual increments (excluding leave without pay). • 24 months continuous service in the case of the biennial increments in clause 24.3 (excluding leave without pay). An increment will only be withheld where action has commenced under clause 17 (Probation), 70 (Managing Underperformance) or 71 (Managing Misconduct, Serious Misconduct, Serious Research Misconduct and Suspension) until the supervisor is satisfied that the staff member’s performance and/or behaviour is assessed as satisfactory.
24.3 From 5 March 2009 incremental progression will be biennial for all academic staff and general staff at ANU 6 and above.
24.4 Casual staff are not entitled to incremental progression but a Teaching Experience payment under clause 23.14 (Salaries – casual/sessional academic staff) may be payable.
INCREMENTAL SALARY PROGRESSION. 25.1. Supervisors will provide reasonable assistance and opportunity to staff members to achieve salary progression.
25.2. A staff member is eligible to be paid at the next salary step within the relevant level on the anniversary of commencement, subject to: • 12 months continuous service in the case of annual increments (excluding leave without pay). • 24 months continuous service in the case of the biennial increments in clause 25.4 (excluding leave without pay).
25.3. An increment will only be withheld in accordance with clauses 75 and 76 (disciplinary action).
25.4. Incremental progression will be biennial for all academic staff and professional staff at ANU 6 and above.
25.5. Casual staff are not entitled to incremental progression but a Teaching Experience payment under clause 24.13 (Salaries – casual/sessional academic staff) may be payable.
