The mentor teacher is a voluntary position which meets the following criteria: a minimum of three years of teaching; recognition as a quality teacher through evaluations as well as by administrators and colleagues; and, when possible, parallel the probationary teacher’s grade level, licensed in the subject and/or field of study, and be assigned in the same building as the probationary teacher.
2. In the event a change of mentor is needed, the building administrator will seek a qualified replacement. The administrator will assure the new mentor teacher will receive the training and support necessary for the task.
3. The mentor teacher will be paid $1,000 for mentoring a probationary teacher. The mentor teacher will be paid $500 for mentoring a second year probationary teacher. The mentor teacher will be paid $500 for mentoring a teacher with more than two years of experience. If the teacher works less than a full year, the amount will be prorated accordingly. A mentor teacher may provide assistance and guidance to not more than two (2) probationary teachers in the same school year.

Mentor Teacher Qualifications • Status as a permanently certified Level III teacher (Master Teacher). • Successful classroom teaching experience and/or direct student contact, 3 years of which must be with the Albuquerque Public Schools. • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with students who have the greatest needs. • Demonstrated outstanding classroom (or direct student contact) teaching ability. • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills. • Evidence of professional growth, including leadership and participation in a wide range of significant professional development activities. • Extensive knowledge of a variety of classroom management, interpersonal interaction and instruction techniques. • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively with other professional staff members. • Demonstrated involvement with students, their families and the community.
