Personal Unpaid Leaves. 10.12.1 The District may grant leaves of absence without pay for reasons other than those generating other leaves under this Article. Unit members who wish to apply for a personal unpaid leave must obtain prior approval of their immediate supervisor and submit their application to the District Office of Human Resources by April 15 for leaves encompassing either the fall semester or the entire school-year. Applications received after April 15 may be subject to summary denial. Unit members will be informed by the Assistant Supervisor of Human Resources or designee by May 15 if the approval for leave was granted or denied. Any unit member on an unpaid leave of absence may continue to be covered under District health and welfare plans by paying to the District the amount of the full premiums to maintain his/her health and welfare plans. The application for unpaid leave of absence shall be in writing on the appropriate District form.
Personal Unpaid Leaves. Leaves of absence for up to one year, without pay, may be granted in accordance with the terms set forth herein. Any request for such leave shall be made, in writing, and submitted to the Director of Personnel no later than March 15 of each year. The request shall set forth the reason(s) for requesting the leave. A committee of three members appointed by the president of the OCTA shall screen all applications and shall select, no later than April 15, up to eight (8) requests to be forwarded to the Board of Education. The Board of Education shall review such requests and shall grant up to five (5) of the requests. The criteria for screening and approval shall be based upon the purpose of the leave, the anticipated likelihood of the teacher returning upon the conclusion of the leave, and the anticipated value of the leave to the District. The decision of the Board of Education as to which applicants are selected for the leave shall not be subject to the grievance procedure. In the event that it is alleged that the Board of Education has abused its discretion with regard to the number of recommendations actually approved, then such determination shall be subject to the grievance procedure.

In the absence of agreement, the employee is entitled to take up to two days (up to a maximum of 16 hours) of unpaid leave per occasion, provided the requirements of 7.2.5(a) and 7.2.5(b) are met.

  • Personal Illness Employees may use accumulated sick leave for hours off due to personal illness. The employee may be required to furnish a medical certificate from a qualified physician as evidence of illness or physical disability in order to qualify for paid sick leave as per District practice. Accumulated sick leave may also be granted for such time as is actually necessary for office visits to a doctor, dentist, optometrist, etc.
