PROBATIONARY AND PERMANENT STATUS. 18.1 New unit employees shall serve a probationary period of one (1) year subject to summary dismissal. During said period, the work performance and efficiency of the employee shall be appraised by the immediate supervisor after the employee has worked three (3) months, after the employee has worked seven (7) months, and after the eleventh (11) calendar month of employment. An employee shall be considered permanent at the completion of the twelve (12) months. 18.2 A permanent employee who is promoted to a higher classification shall retain permanent status in the lower classification and shall serve a six (6) month probationary period in the higher classification.

The Chancellor may extend the probationary period up to three (3) additional calendar months, not to exceed a total of twelve (12) calendar months. B. A probationary employee may be demoted, suspended, or dismissed at any time during the probationary period at the discretion of the District and such action shall not be subject to the grievance procedure or any other District review procedure. C. An employee who is promoted shall serve a probationary period of six (6) working months in the higher classification. D. A permanent employee who is serving a probationary period as a result of promotion and who is found unsatisfactory in the higher position shall be reinstated in permanent status in the former classification, unless there is cause for dismissal from the District. Any decision to reinstate an employee to his or her former classification shall not be grievable or subject to any other District review procedure. E. A regular employee in a classified position shall have the opportunity to self elect to return to his/her former position within two (2) months of the date of promotion to the new position. When such an employee returns to his or her former position, the employee who replaced him/her shall be required to return to their former position and so on. F. Employees returning to their former position shall have their rate of pay adjusted accordingly and return to a rate of pay received in the former position.

Employees Unit members on the 39/63 month re-employment list who are placed in a different classification than the one previously held shall serve a probationary period of six (6) working months or 130 days of paid service, whichever is longer. A reemployed unit member who is found unsatisfactory in the new classification shall be returned to the 39/63 month reemployment list to conclude the time remaining on the list.

For Support Services Assistant I/II and Coordinator, employees hired after February 19, 2008 shall have a probationary period of one year in accordance with P.O.S.T. certification standards. Upon determination by the department head that a probationary period has been successfully completed, the employee shall be granted permanent status.
