Sick Leave Definition/Benefits. Each employee shall be entitled to twelve (12) sick leave days per school term without loss of pay. Teachers with a minimum of twenty (20) years of District service will be granted fifteen (15) sick leave days. Unused sick leave shall accumulate to a maximum of three hundred forty (340) days. Sick leave shall be interpreted to mean personal illness, quarantine at home, serious illness or death in the immediate family or household, or birth, adoption, or placement for adoption as provided in Section 5/24-6 of The School Code. The immediate family for purposes of this article shall include: parents, spouse, brothers, sisters, children, grandparents, grandchildren, parents-in-law, brothers/sisters- in-law, grandparents-in-law, legal guardians, and domestic partners. Upon request of the Superintendent, an absence in excess of three (3) consecutive work days due to an illness or disability of the teacher or the teacher’s immediate family must be documented by a physician’s certificate. Failure to submit such evidence will result in denial of paid sick leave for such absence. Except in cases of emergency medical treatment, the Administration must be notified at least thirty (30) days before a teacher’s scheduled surgery, hospitalization or planned absence for medical reasons. The teacher must also submit a physician’s certificate verifying the basis for the medical leave of absence and the teacher’s anticipated return date post-hospitalization or surgery.

However, a teacher shall be eligible to receive more than thirteen (13) sick leave days at the start of a school year provided the teacher meets the following service requirements. Teachers with a minimum of eleven (11) years of District service will be granted fifteen (15) sick leave days. Teachers with a minimum of twenty (20) years of District service will be granted eighteen (18) sick leave days. Unused sick leave shall accumulate to an unlimited number of days. Sick leave shall be interpreted to mean personal illness, quarantine at home, serious illness or death in the immediate family or household, or birth, adoption, or placement for adoption as provided in Section 5/24-6 of The School Code.
