FREEDOM. In performance of their teaching functions, teachers shall be responsible to provide students with the opportunity to investigate all facets, sides, and/or opinions of and about any and all topics and materials introduced or presented and shall have a special responsibility to provide such opportunity with regard to those which are or may be of a controversial nature. Such material presented to students must be relevant to the basic content of the course and appropriate to the maturity level and intellectual ability of the students. The teacher shall further be responsible to permit the expression of the views and opinions of others and to encourage students to examine, analyze, evaluate and synthesize all available information about such topics and materials and to encourage each to form his/her own views and opinions of others and for the right of individuals to form and hold different views and opinions. The basic content of a course and provisions for its implementation and supervision shall be the responsibility of the Board.

FREEDOM. 19.01 The parties seek to educate people in the democratic tradition, to xxxxxx a recognition of individual freedom and social responsibility, to inspire meaningful awareness of and respect for the Constitutions of the State of Florida and of the United States, and to instill appreciation of the values of individual personality. 19.02 Employees shall have academic freedom. Academic freedom shall mean that employees have freedom of association and expression in keeping with their individual conscience. Employees shall present instructional materials which are pertinent to the subject and level taught. Such presentation shall be within the guidelines of appropriate course content and within the instructional program and shall present all facts of controversial issues in a scholarly and objective manner. 19.03 Employees shall be entitled to freedom of discussion within the classroom in all matters which are relevant to the subject matter under study. 19.04 All employees shall consult with the administration whenever the employee intends to inject into course coverage units which might be reasonably anticipated to be controversial. Upon request, the employee shall meet with his/her immediate supervisor to discuss the proposed unit of study and how it fits into the course content as provided in Section 19.02. 19.05 Supplemental materials that are not part of the prescribed curriculum and pacing guide can be used upon approval of the site administrator.
FREEDOM. Teachers shall be allowed to study, investigate, and teach facts and ideas concerning man, human society, the physical and biological world, and other branches of learning according to community standards mutually agreed upon by the Board and the teaching staff. FREEDOM. 2.01 The teachers, administrators, and the Board of Education seek to educate young people in the democratic tradition, to xxxxxx a recognition of individual freedom and responsibility to society, to inspire meaningful awareness of and respect for the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and to instill appreciation of the values of individual personality. It is recognized that these democratic values can best be transmitted in an atmosphere in which academic freedom for teacher and student is encouraged. 2.02 Academic freedom may be defined as the right of qualified scholars in their own field of expertise to pursue the search for truth in its many forms, and to make public their methods and findings. It is the right of qualified teachers to encourage freedom of discussion of questions in the classroom, and to develop in the students a love of knowledge and a desire to search for truth. The teachers should keep in mind that academic freedom is not a guaranteed political right, but rather a necessary condition for the successful practice of the academic profession in a free society. 2.03 The application of the principle of academic freedom at the elementary-secondary school level involves considerations that are not always equally present in a college or university setting. The teachers should take into account the relative immaturity of their students, and the need for guidance and help in studying the issues and arriving at balanced views. The teacher should also recognize that academic freedom presupposes the teacher to be a qualified scholar in the problem area being considered, and that the general introductory nature of elementary and secondary education makes it difficult for a teacher to be truly expert in everything he or she teaches. 2.04 While the Board intends to protect teachers from any censorship or restraint that interferes with their obligation to pursue truth in fulfilling their classroom duties, it also expects that controversial issues will be presented in a fair and unbiased manner, and that the maturity and intellectual grasp of the students will be taken into account. It is recognized that bargaining unit members have the direct responsibility in educating the students of the Eastern Local School District, it is equally recognized by the Board and the Association that Eastern Local School Board has the final authority and responsibility to determine and approve the educational curriculum of the school district. FREEDOM. Section 1. A faculty member is entitled to full freedom in research and in the publication of the results, subject to the adequate performance of his/her other academic or administrative duties. Section 2. A faculty member is entitled to freedom in the classroom in discussing his/her academic/vocational-technical discipline, but he/she should be careful not to introduce into his/her teaching controversial matter which has no relation to his/her academic/vocational-technical discipline. Section 3. A faculty member is a citizen and a member of a learned profession. When he/she speaks or writes as a citizen, he/she should be free from school censorship or discipline, but his/her special position in the community imposes special obligations. As a person of learning, he/she should remember that the public may judge his/her profession and his/her institution. Hence, he/she should at all times be accurate, should exercise appropriate restraint, should show respect for the opinions of others, and should make every effort to indicate that he/she is not a spokesperson of the institution. Acts which interfere with the activities of the institution, acts which interfere with the freedom of movement on the campus, or acts which interfere with the freedom of all members of the academic community to pursue their rightful goals, are the antithesis of academic freedom and responsibility. So also are such acts which, in effect, deny freedom to speak, to be heard, to study, to teach, to administer and to pursue research. Section 4. a. Faculty members are entitled to freedom in the selection of textbooks, audio- visual aids and other teaching aids. However, where faculty teaching the same subject have agreed on a common textbook or teaching materials those materials shall prevail.
FREEDOM. 22.1 Every employee is entitled to exercise Academic Freedom in the performance of their duties. However, it is recognized Academic Freedom must be exercised responsibly and act within pertinent legislation. 22.2 People benefit from the search for knowledge and its free exposition. Academic freedom is essential to both these purposes in the teaching function of the College as well as in its scholarship and research. There shall be no infringement or abridgement of the academic freedom of any faculty member. 22.3 Academic freedom is the freedom to examine, question, teach, and learn, and it involves the right to investigate, speculate, and comment without regard to prescribed doctrine. Academic freedom ensures: (a) Freedom in the conduct of teaching and the performance of duties; (b) Freedom in undertaking research and publishing or making public the results thereof; and (c) Freedom from institutional censorship. 22.4 Academic Freedom carries with it the duty to use that freedom in a responsible way and in a manner consistent with the scholarly obligation to base teaching and research on an honest search for knowledge, and on the prescribed learning outcomes of the course outlines.
