Bereavement and Family Illness Leave. A maximum of forty- eight (48) hours of accumulated sick leave may be taken each calendar year in case an employee's presence is required elsewhere because of sickness, disability or death affecting the employee's immediate family. The immediate family shall consist of the spouse, children, parents, brothers, sisters, parents-in-law, brothers and sisters-in-law, grandparents, domestic partner or dependents of the employee. Domestic partner is defined as a person living within the employee's household with whom they have a spousal-like relationship.

Bereavement and Family Illness Leave. Employees desiring bereavement or family illness leave shall notify their immediate supervisor and relate the reason for the request. Such leave shall be granted only when the relative was related to the employee as a spouse, grandparent, spouse’s grandparent, parent, spouse’s parent, child, sibling, spouse’s sibling, brother or sister-in-law, spouse’s brother or sister-in-law, grandchild, uncle, aunt, niece or nephew. If a teacher no longer has an immediate family, this will include the next of kin. Leaves may also be granted when the relative was residing with the employee. Other leaves may be granted at the discretion of the superintendent/designee if prior approval is requested. This would include, but not be limited to, attendance at funerals of friends or associates.

In each such case the City Manager or designee shall grant use of Sick, Vacation or Composite Leave only when, in his opinion, the relationship of the sick, deceased, or disabled person to the employee warrants such use of Sick, Vacation or Composite Leave. In no event shall an employee be granted sick time to attend to childcare for children who are not ill.

In addition, up to five (5) days of compensatory time or vacation may be used, with prior management approval, to extend leave provided above.
