Criteria for Tenure. (a) The decision to award tenure to an employee shall take into account the employee's performance over the entire term of tenure earning service at FIU and shall be based on established criteria specified in writing by the University. The decision shall take into account the following:
(1) annual assignments, annual performance evaluations, an tenure appraisals;
(2) the needs of the department/unit, college/unit, and University;
(3) the contributions of the employee to the employee's academic unit (program, department/unit, college/unit); and
(4) the contributions the employee is expected to make to the institution.
(b) The University shall provide the criteria for tenure online to employees eligible for tenure, and each such employee shall be apprised in writing once each year of the employee's progress toward tenure. The tenure appraisal shall be included as a separate component of the annual evaluation and is intended to provide assistance and counseling to candidates to help them to qualify themselves for tenure. The employee may request, in writing, a meeting with an administrator at the next higher level to discuss concerns regarding the tenure appraisal that were not resolved in previous discussions with the evaluator. Tenure appraisals shall not be the sole basis for a decision concerning tenure for the employee.

(1) annual performance evaluations;
(2) the needs of the Department/Unit, College/division, and University;
(3) the contributions of the Faculty Member to the Faculty Member’s academic Unit (program, Department/Unit, College/division); and
(4) the contributions the Faculty Member is expected to make to the institution. The University will give a copy of the criteria for tenure to Faculty eligible for tenure, and each such Faculty Member will be apprised in writing once each Year of the Faculty Member’s progress toward tenure. The appraisal will be included as a separate section of the annual evaluation and is intended to provide assistance and counseling to candidates to help them qualify themselves for tenure. The tenure appraisals are not binding upon the University. The Faculty Member may request, in writing, a meeting with an administrator at the next higher level to discuss concerns regarding the tenure appraisal which were not resolved in previous discussions with the evaluator. Tenure criteria will be available in the Department/Unit office and/or at the College/division level.
Criteria for Tenure. 02.01 To receive a recommendation for tenure, the member must have the qualifications required to support effectively the University's teaching programs and research and other scholarly and creative activities. In particular, the member must:
(A) be a full-time member of the teaching staff and hold the academic rank of Associate Professor or above or be a candidate for the promotion to the rank of Associate Professor pursuant to Article 25.01;
(B) hold a doctorate or the degree normally considered to be terminal in his/her discipline;
(C) have at least four years of experience in university teaching or a combination of at least two years of university teaching experience plus at least four years of relevant professional practice;
(D) demonstrate that the quality of his/her teaching is satisfactory as may be established by the evaluation of his/her teaching;
(E) demonstrate contributions in the field of research or other scholarly and creative activities that go beyond the fulfilment of the requirements of his/her terminal degree; and,
(F) have discharged reasonable administrative responsibilities within the University community (16.04) and/or service to the Profession and the community (16.05).
Criteria for Tenure. Tenured appointments will be offered as first appointments normally only to individuals who are to be appointed at a rank of Associate Professor, Professor, Professional Associate III, or Professional Associate IV. A Selection Committee, in considering a Tenured Appointment as a first appointment, shall base its recommendation on the criteria outlined in this Article. Members with probationary appointments shall be considered for tenure at the appropriate time according to Article 7 (Probation). Tenurable ranks are Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, and Professional Associate II, III, and IV.
Criteria for Tenure. III.7.4.1 In assessing a candidate for tenure, the Departmental/Program Tenure Committee, COAP, the Xxxxxxx and Vice President Academic, the President, and the Board shall pay principal regard to the candidate’s scholarship and scholarly promise. In order to qualify for tenure, the candidate must be judged to have demonstrated high quality in both teaching and research, including fulfilling the applicable duties and responsibilities referenced in IV.1.1. i) and ii).
III.7.4.2 Individual departments/programs will formally adopt written standards specific to the academic unit for the application of these criteria in the tenure process. These standards shall be binding upon the Departmental/Program Tenure Committees following approval by the Xxxxxxx and Vice President Academic, in consultation with the department/program and Xxxx. The written standards will be made available to Faculty Board and Joint Committee for information and discussion.
III.7.4.3 Departments/programs shall review their written standards at least every seven years. When a department/program revises its written standards for the application of the tenure criteria, the Chair of the department/program Committee shall submit the proposed revisions to the Xxxx, who shall forward them to the Xxxxxxx and Vice President Academic. These revised standards shall be binding upon the Departmental/Program Tenure Committees following approval by the Xxxxxxx and Vice President Academic, in consultation with the department/program and Xxxx. Approved revised written standards will be made available to Faculty Board and Joint Committee for information and discussion.
III.7.4.4 Where the standards have been revised during a candidate’s probationary period, specific notice of the change(s) will be given by the Xxxx to the candidate, copied to his/her Chair. The Xxxx’x notice shall draw the candidate’s attention to the relevant sections of this agreement, including the deadlines specified in III.7.5.
III.7.4.5 When a department/program adopts or revises its written standards for the application of the tenure criteria (in accordance with III.7.4.

(c) Tenure criteria shall be available in the department/school office and/or at the college/unit level.
Criteria for Tenure. 10.2.1 Tenure recommendations and decisions shall be made on the basis of meeting the established standards during the probationary period and any years credited towards the probationary period and of clear promise of continuing intellectual and professional development as demonstrated by the following general criteria:
i. evidence of proficient and scholarly teaching;
ii. evidence of scholarship, where applicable, congruent with the teaching loads and resources available for scholarship at an undergraduate university;
iii. evidence of significant contributions in service; and
iv. evidence that the duties have been carried out in a responsible and professional manner. The standards shall be met in all applicable categories. Exceeding the standards in one category shall not lower the performance expectations in the other categories.
10.2.2 Tenure recommendations and decisions shall be based solely on the general criteria in this Article, the Addendum on Teaching, Scholarship and Service, and the detailed criteria recommended by General Faculties Council and approved by the Board of Governors in effect on the date of commencement of appointment, and shall be made in accordance with the Process and Timelines for Tenure System II in effect on the date of commencement of appointment.
