Scholarly Teaching Fellows. A Scholarly Teaching Fellow (STF) is an academic staff member who is principally engaged in teaching. Teaching will normally form 75% of the workload, with the remainder of the workload allocated to engagement and scholarship. The primary purpose of such positions is to undertake teaching work previously undertaken by casual academic staff. To be eligible for appointment the prospective candidate must hold a PhD and have completed 24 months as a fixed-term or casual Academic staff member. Through the annual workforce planning process, the University will normally make available two positions per year. Selection will be based on merit. STF appointments will normally be on an on-going basis at Academic Level A or B, with selection based on a competitive process with demonstrated outstanding teaching performance an essential requirement. STF’s will be subject to the normal processes for probation, promotion and PPR.

Scholarly Teaching Fellows. [149] This clause obliges Xxxxxxx to recruit a minimum of eight new academic employees as Scholarly Teaching Fellows over the life of the Agreement. The appointments must be continuing or three-year fixed term. They must undertake work previously performed by Sessional Casual Academics or Academics employed on fixed term contracts of not more than 12 months. Scholarly Teaching Fellows. 17.1 The parties to this Agreement recognise the need for innovative approaches to maximise the range of employment options that the University can utilise to not only meet a dynamic and changing environment but also to provide current and prospective staff with suitable and sustainable employment opportunities. 17.2 The purpose of Scholarly Teaching Fellow positions is: (a) to advance the University’s goal of excellence in learning and teaching; (b) to offer sustainable alternatives to longer term sessional academic engagements; (c) to provide a transitional pathway for staff from sessional engagement to teaching and research appointments; (d) to facilitate reducing the proportion of sessional staff employed in the University; and (e) that the majority of work performed by Scholarly Teaching Fellows will replace work previously performed by sessional staff. The University will not reduce the proportion of continuing appointments in the University as a consequence of this clause. 17.3 The University is committed to employing a number of Scholarly Teaching Fellows equivalent to 5% of the reported sessional staff FTE on the census date of 31 March 2014 by no later than the nominal expiry date of this Agreement, and then maintaining that number thereafter during the operation of this Agreement. 17.4 For the purposes of achieving this 5% target the University may continue to count any former Scholarly Teaching Fellow who is still employed in a teaching focused (Education Focused) role and notwithstanding that the staff member may have moved to a higher classification. 17.5 Scholarly Teaching Fellow positions will be full-time or part-time and filled on a three-year fixed-term basis in accordance with clause
Scholarly Teaching Fellows. 16.1 The University may employ STFs, in accordance with this clause. 16.2 These positions will be offered on an ongoing or a fixed-term basis for a period of three (3) years. 16.3 Where the University creates a Scholarly Teaching Fellow position, or a Scholarly Teaching Fellow position becomes vacant, the University will advertise internally to casual academic staff in the first instance. The University will fill these positions through an open and merit based selection process. 16.4 Applicants for an STF appointment must have at least one (1) year's academic employment experience in an Australian university (excluding a person who has held a continuing academic appointment). 16.5 STFs will principally undertake teaching and teaching related work that would otherwise have been performed in the University by casual academic staff. 16.6 STFs may be allocated up to 100% of their workload in the combined categories of teaching, activities related to teaching and teaching scholarship. Allocation of workload will be in accordance with arrangements for Teaching Focused academic staff. 16.7 STFs will be paid in a salary range commencing at no less than at Level A, step 3, and are eligible for incremental progression in accordance with Clause 20 (Performance Development), up to a maximum of Level B step 6; provided that any Teaching Scholar who holds a relevant doctoral qualification will be paid a salary no lower than Level A step 6. STFs may be appointed at Level A or B. 16.8 At the expiration of a fixed-term appointment period, the Employee will be appointed on a continuing basis subject to the Employee having satisfactorily performed in that position and the work continuing to be required to be performed. That appointment may be a teaching focused appointment or may be teaching and research as discussed and agreed through the Career Success process. 16.9 A STF may apply for academic promotion in accordance with the University's promotion process.

An equal number of positions will be created in each year of the agreement’s life. 9.5.2 Scholarly Teaching Fellows will be paid in a salary range commencing at Level A3 or Level B, with annual incremental progression, where performance is assessed as satisfactory, up to a maximum of Level B Step 3. 9.5.3 The creation of, and funding for, a Scholarly Teaching Fellow position will exclusively result from the “bundling” of existing casual staffing positions, responsibilities and duties into a full-time, or half-time appointment such that those casual staffing positions are no longer required because of the appointment of a Scholarly Teaching Fellow position.
