Sick Leave - Notice. To be entitled to sick leave during a period, an employee must give the employer notice as soon as reasonably practicable (which may be at a time before or after the sick leave has started) that the employee is (or will be) absent from his or her employment during the period because of a personal illness, or injury, of the employee. This requirement does not apply to an employee who could not comply with it because of circumstances beyond the employee’s control.

The City shall use the progressive disciplinary policy in order to police this section (and shall not use an automatic reduction in pay policy).

In order to draw sick pay, a worker shall make every effort to notify his / her supervisor prior to the scheduled starting time each day unless the worker is able to advise the supervisor of the specific anticipated duration of the absence on the first day of illness. If the duration of the illness is not confirmed by a physician’s certificate and is to last more than three working days, the worker shall notify his / her supervisor on the fourth day away from work of the anticipated date of return unless the worker is unable to provide such notice either personally or through another individual. If a worker becomes seriously ill while on vacation leave, the period of absence from work while seriously ill may be changed to sick leave, provided the worker notifies his / her supervisor during the period of illness or, if out of the area, submits sufficient evidence of the illness upon return to the area.

In the event an employee needs to be absent from work, the employee shall inform his/her direct supervisor as soon as possible but no less than at least one (1) hour prior to their shift. If leave is submitted to the electronic absence management system with at least 24 hours advance notice, the employee need not provide additional notice to his/her direct supervisor.

C. A licensed health care provider’s statement may be required regarding any illness/injury leave lasting more than five consecutive contract days, as the absence may qualify for Family Medical Leave 6.150.

Such notification shall be submitted within a reasonable time prior to the beginning date of such absence.
