Bereavement Leave Pay. 1. Paid Leave
a. An Employee will be granted the amount of time off with pay that is required to attend the funeral, memorial, or other similar services or gatherings, and/or to make arrangements necessitated by the death of any of the following: The Employee’s spouse or significant other non related person living in the Employee’s household or the child, parent (including step- parent or the significant other of a parent), grandparent, sibling, grandchild (or spouse/significant other of any of the preceding) of either the Employee or the Employee’s spouse or significant other.
b. An Employee experiencing bereavement upon conclusion of a pregnancy, in cases other than live birth, shall be granted paid bereavement leave.
c. Up to three (3) consecutive days (Monday – Friday) will be paid. If there are extenuating circumstances, such as travel, an additional two
Bereavement Leave Pay. 39.01 An employee will be granted bereavement leave with pay to arrange or attend funerals.
39.02 Employees shall be granted five (5) days paid leave of absence in the event of a death of a spouse or a child or parent.
39.03 Employees shall be granted up to three (3) days paid leave of absence in the event of a death of other immediate family members.
39.04 Immediate family is generally defined as grandparents, stepparents, stepchildren, grandchildren and spouses, children's spouses, brothers, sisters, spouse's parents, and spouse's brothers and sisters.
39.05 In exceptional circumstances, paid leave of absence can be extended to, but limited to, a maximum of five (5) days. Exceptional circumstances include journeys which cannot be completed in one (1) or two (2) days.
39.06 The above categories include relations of the employee by marriage, common-law or adoption.
Bereavement Leave Pay a. Employees will be granted four (4) days off with pay at the employee's straight time rate in the event of the death of the employee's spouse or child, and four (4) days in the event of the death of any other member of the immediate family defined as parent, parent-in-law, child, sister or brother, spouse, grandparents, grandparents-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in- law, or other members of the employee's household. The Employer reserves the right to verify the legal relationship of the family member of the employee.
b. Employees shall be granted one day off, the day of the funeral, without loss of pay, for the funeral of any other relative.
c. Effective January 1, 1982, if an employee in the bargaining unit has to travel 450 miles to attend a funeral, he shall be entitled to one
(1) extra day off without loss of pay.
Bereavement Leave Pay a) When death occurs in an employee's immediate family, i.e., spouse, parent, parent of current spouse, child, brother, sister, grandparents, the employee, on request, will be excused for any of the first three (3) normally scheduled working days immediately following the date of death, provided he/she attends the funeral/memorial service. An employee may request additional time off which may be granted if circumstances substantiate the need for additional time as determined by the Sheriff. Such time would be without pay or, at the option of the employee, may be charged against their sick, vacation, or personal leave banks.
b) An employee excused from work under this Section shall receive their base wage on such scheduled days of work for which he/she was excused.

b. In the event a Firefighter or Tele-communicator is killed in the line of duty in the State of New Jersey, the Township and FMBA Local 88 will designate two (2) members of the FMBA to attend the funeral. One representative will be chosen by the Township manager and one by Local 88.
