Bereavement Days. A. All employees may use up to (5) sick days for bereavement days for deaths in the immediate family. Immediate Family is defined as spouse, children, grandchildren, brother, sister, parents, grandparents and parent-in-law, brother/sister-in-law except that a relative living in the same household may, for the purpose of this section, be considered as of the immediate family. Two (2) of the sick days will not be chargeable to the employee's sick day bank. B. All employees may use up to five (5) sick days for illness in the immediate family. The employer may require verification of illness. Immediate family includes spouse and children.

Bereavement Days. In the case of bereavement of immediate family (as defined in article IX.G.1 below), employees will be given three (3) days that do not count against personal or sick leave. Additional bereavement days taken will be deducted from sick leave.
Bereavement Days. In the case of death in the immediate family of a teacher under contract, the teacher is entitled to be absent without loss of compensation for a period extending not more than five (5) school days, if used within twenty-one (21) calendar days beyond such death for the purpose of attending the last burial rites and attending to other personal matters of the immediate family member. Immediate family shall be interpreted as spouse, child (biological, adopted, step, xxxxxx), mother, father, legal guardian, brother (biological, adopted, step, xxxxxx), sister (biological, adopted, step, xxxxxx), grandparent, in-laws (mother, father, grandparent, son, daughter, brother, sister) or grandchildren. In the case of death of an uncle, aunt, niece, nephew, in-laws (aunt, uncle), or any other person who at the time of death was living as a member of the teacher’s household the teacher is entitled to be absent two (2) days without loss of compensation, provided, however, said teacher does attend in person the last burial rites of said person, that said burial rites occur while said teacher is performing duties as assigned by the school employer under a valid teacher’s contract, and that said burial rites do not occur during the time when said teacher is absent from assigned duties due to vacation, leave of absence, sick leaves, or leaves for personal business which may have been previously granted or approved by the school employer.

Each hour paid to an Employee shall be paid at the Employee's straight time base rate of pay and shall not include shift premium or other premium payment. This benefit is payable only to active Employees whose absence from work is due to the death in the Employee's family and will not be paid in lieu of other types of paid leave. -260 Part-time Employees will be paid only for the hours scheduled to work but not worked because of the death. -261 Allowed bereavement days may be taken any time during the period including the day of death and the day following the funeral. -262 The supervisor may grant permission to a reasonable number of Employees to attend the funeral or serve as pallbearers for a deceased Employee or former Employee, without loss of pay.

In the event of the death in the immediate family, a Bargaining Unit employee will be granted a four (4) day leave of absence with pay to be charged against his accumulated paid sick leave, or without pay if no accumulated sick leave is available. For such purpose, the immediate family shall be considered to be a father, mother, brother, sister, spouse, child, mother-in-law, father-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, legal guardian, or a person who stands in a special filial relationship. Section 2. In the event of the death of a relative other than a member of his immediate family, an employee shall be granted a leave of absence with pay, to be charged against his accumulated paid sick leave, for one (1) day to attend the funeral if within the State of Ohio or two (2) days when the funeral is outside the State of Ohio. Section 3. Employees attending the funeral of a said immediate family member, as set out in Section 1 above, when the funeral is more than one hundred fifty (150) miles from their home, shall be entitled to five (5) days of funeral/bereavement leave. Section 4. The above sections shall only apply when the relationship is through blood or consanguinity. Section 5. These days shall be recorded as bereavement day/excused absences and deducted from employee's sick leave.
Bereavement Days. The long-term substitute teacher is entitled to bereavement days as made available by the LTA contract, which is limited exclusively to the long-term substitute teacher’s immediate family.

Extenuating circumstances regarding other individuals may be considered by the Board on a case by case basis. Unused bereavement leave at the end of each partial or full contract year shall not be cumulative.
