A Decision-Support System is a mathematical model that converts the geostatistical analysis of population density into a set of alternatives for the manager to consider in making a decision on forest management given the possibility of an outbreak. The logical categories provide the following: 1) a coherent plan for maximizing opportunities for collecting the best data in a given year; 2) applying techniques to define the best habitat and thereby reduce the total area that must be sampled; 3) actual collection of data in the field based on 1&2; and 4) analyzing the data to understand population behavior and to predict potential outbreaks.
