Safety Release. A. An employee who is required by the City to work sixteen (16) or more hours in any twenty-four (24) hour work day, and who is scheduled to work a shift in the next twenty-four (24) hour work day, from the start of the sixteen (16) hours, shall be guaranteed at least eight (8) hours off before being required to return to active duty status. Any portion of the eight (8) hours that overlaps with the beginning of the employee’s next shift will be considered paid leave time and there will be no deductions made from the employee’s leave accruals. If employees are directed to work their next scheduled shift, they shall be paid at the rate of time and one half (1 ½ ) for such portion of the shift which falls within the eight (8) hours of time off.
B. Prior to working sixteen (16) or more hours in any twenty-four (24) hour work day, the employee shall make the on-duty or on-call shift Sergeant aware that the employee believes their current work assignment may result in the employee working sixteen (16) or more hours in the twenty-four (24) hour work day.
Safety Release. Employees working sixteen or more hours in a twenty-four hour work day shall be provided at least nine hours of safety release time before beginning their next regularly scheduled shift. The employee shall advise an on-duty shift sergeant as soon as he or she reasonably believes their shift will extend beyond sixteen hours and no later than one hour before reaching the sixteen hour threshold, unless to do so is not feasible. If the safety release time will extend into the employee’s next regularly scheduled shift, the employee may use administrative leave for the period of their regular shift taken off to meet the nine-hour safety release. If the safety release time will extend more than half- way through the employee’s next shift, the employee may opt to use accrued leave for the remainder of the shift beyond the nine-hour safety release period. If the employee does not have sufficient accrued leave, the employee may use unpaid leave.

Employees actually working sixteen or more hours in a twenty-four hour work day1 shall be provided at least nine hours of safety release time before beginning their next regularly scheduled shift. (NOTE: If there are four (4) hours or less between an employee’s work assignments, the time between the assignments, although unpaid and not worked, will count toward the sixteen hours for purposes of safety release only.) The employee shall advise an on-duty shift sergeant as soon as he or she reasonably believes their shift will extend beyond sixteen hours and no later than one hour before reaching the sixteen hour threshold, unless to do so is not feasible. If the safety release time will extend into the employee’s next regularly scheduled shift, the employee shall be given administrative leave for the period of their regular shift taken off to meet the nine-hour safety release. If the safety release time will not extend more than half-way through the employee’s next shift, the employee is expected to report to work at the end of the safety release time. If the safety release time will extend more than half-way through the employee’s next shift, the employee may opt to take the remainder of the shift off and use accrued leave (vacation, sick, ILH or compensatory time) for the remainder of the shift beyond the nine-hour safety release period. If the employee does not have sufficient accrued leave, the employee may use unpaid leave.
Safety Release. Employees actually working sixteen or more hours in a twenty-four hour work day1 shall be provided at least nine hours of safety release time before beginning their next regularly scheduled shift.
Safety Release. Employees working sixteen or more hours in a twenty-four-hour period who provide notice to their supervisor at least one hour prior to reaching the sixteen-hour threshold may be given their next consecutive scheduled shift off with pay. In such event, no deduction shall be made from the employee’s leave. If employees are directed to work their next consecutive scheduled shift, they shall be paid at the rate of time and one-half for such shift. The twenty- four-hour period described herein shall commence at the start of the employee’s regularly scheduled shift Employees who do not receive eight (8) consecutive hours off either before or after a court appearance will receive sufficient administrative hours off with pay to equal eight (8) hours off. Employees working the graveyard shift, K-9 and night traffic car, who appear in court on the day before the start of the first day of their consecutive work days shall receive sufficient administrative hours off with pay to equal eight (8) consecutive hours off after their court appearance. Employees assigned to any Detective assignment (including Narcotics and Metro Gang Enforcement) shall not be subject to Section 12.7.
Safety Release. Employees who are on a seven-day stand-by assignment, and who actually work sixteen or more hours in a twenty-four-hour workday shall be provided at least eight hours of safety release time before beginning their next regularly scheduled shift. Time spent on stand-by but not working will not count.
Safety Release. An employee required by the City to work fourteen (14) or more hours in a twenty- four (24)-hour period shall be guaranteed at least eight (8) hours of Safety Release time off before being required to work their next regularly-scheduled shift or portion thereof. When practicable, prior to working fourteen (14) or more hours in any twenty-four (24)-hour period, the employee shall advise his/her supervisor that the employee believes his/her current work assignment may result in the employee becoming eligible for Safety Release time off. An employee granted Safety Release time off may use accrued leave while absent from his/her regular shift or take the time off as unpaid.
Safety Release. An employee who is required by the City to work more than fifteen (15) hours in any twenty-four (24)-hour work period and who is scheduled to work a shift in the next twenty-four (24)-hour work period shall be provided at least nine (9) hours off before being required to return to active duty status.
8.11.1 For the purposes of this section, "required by the City" means:
8.11.1. a An employee is under subpoena;
8.11.1. b An employee is involved in an investigation in which the employee is
Safety Release. The Sheriff's Office will make every reasonable effort to ensure that an employee will not work more than sixteen (16) hours consecutively unless deemed necessary by the Sheriff or his designee.
A. An employee who is required by the County to work sixteen (16) or more hours in any twenty-four (24) hour work day and who is scheduled to work a work shift in the next twenty-four (24) hour work day shall be guaranteed at least nine (9) hours off before being required to return to active duty status.
B. When practical, prior to working sixteen (16) or more hours in any twenty-four (24) hour work day, the employee shall make the on-duty shift supervisor aware that the employee believes their current work assignment may result in the employee working sixteen (16) or more hours in the twenty-four (24) hour work day.
C. Following is an example to demonstrate how the employee will be compensated.
1. A Graveyard shift employee works 1800 to 0600 (twelve (12) hours worked). The Graveyard shift employee is required to be in Court from 0830 to 1430 (six (6) hours worked).
2. A total of 18 hours is worked within 24 hours, so to get 9 hours off from 1430 to 2330, the employee is not due back to work until 2330 and the employee will be compensated for hours from 1800 to 2330 as safety leave with pay and the employee will work from 2330 until 0600.
Safety Release. An employee who is required by the City to work more than fifteen (15) hours in any twenty-four (24)-hour work period and who is scheduled to work a shift in the next twenty-four (24)-hour work period shall be provided at least nine (9) hours off before being required to return to active duty status.
8.15.1 For the purposes of this section, "required by the City" means:
8.15.1. a an employee is under subpoena;
8.15.1. b an employee is involved in an investigation in which the employee is unable to leave work before concluding their investigative duties;
8.15.1. c an emergency as defined in 8.01 A.;
8.15.1. d an employee is ordered by a supervisor to work;
8.15.1. e an employee is required to participate in mandatory training;
8.15.1. f an employee is scheduled to work their regularly scheduled shift in conjunction with 8.15.1.a through 8.15.1.e above.
8.15.2 An employee shall not work more than fifteen (15) hours in any twenty-four (24)- hour period except as set forth in subsections 8.15.1.a, b and/or c above.
8.15.3 Prior to working more than fifteen (15) hours in any twenty-four (24)-hour period, the employee shall make the on-duty Sergeant, Captain or Chief aware that the employee believes their current work assignment may result in the employee working more than fifteen (15) hours in a twenty-four (24)-hour period.
8.15.4 An employee who is required by the City to work more than fifteen (15) hours in any twenty-four (24)-hour period shall be required to take Safety Release time off and be provided at least nine (9) hours Safety Release time off being required and allowed by the City to return to active duty status. The employee required to take Safety Release time off during their next scheduled work shift will be compensated by the City at the employee's regular rate of pay for the hours necessary to get the employee nine (9) hours of Safety Release time.
8.15.5 If, after nine (9) hours of Safety Release time, there will be less than half (1/2) the employee's regular work shift remaining, the employee may have the option of electing to use any accrued leave for the remainder of the shift they were scheduled to work. An employee electing to exercise this option must notify the on-duty Sergeant at least two (2) hours prior to exercising this option.
