Bereavement Leave - Immediate Family. In the event of death of a member of an employee’s immediate family, said employee shall be granted five days paid leave. For purposes of bereavement leave, immediate family is defined as spouse, child (including step and xxxxxx), parent (or legal guardian), parent-in-law, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, brother/sister-in-law, or member of the employee’s household.

Bereavement Leave - Immediate Family. An employee shall be granted leave of absence with pay for the three (3) working shifts immediately following the day of the death of the employee's spouse, parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, brother, sister, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in- law, and brother-in-law, or any such relative of such employee residing in the household of the employee.
Bereavement Leave - Immediate Family. In case of the death of an administrator’s spouse, child, step child, parent, step parent, or domestic partner who has resided in the employee’s household for the prior twelve (12) consecutive months prior to the domestic partner’s death, the administrator will be allowed an absence with pay of up to five (5) calendar days for bereavement including the day of the funeral. In case of the death of an administrator’s sibling, step-sibling, mother/father-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, sister/brother-in-law, the administrator will be allowed an absence with pay of up to three (3) bereavement days including the day of the funeral. Bereavement days must be taken within five (5) calendar days immediately following the death. This restriction may be waived by the Superintendent or designee in their discretion when special circumstances warrant.

In case of the death of a professional employee’s sibling, step-sibling, mother/father-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, sister/brother-in-law, the professional employee will be allowed an absence with pay of up to three (3) bereavement days including the day of the funeral. Bereavement days must be taken within five (5) calendar days immediately following the death. In the case of the death of an aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew of a professional employee or spouse of a professional employee, an absence of one (1) calendar day to attend the funeral. No Bereavement leave will be paid for any day during school vacation weeks. Notwithstanding the above, for cremation, the three (3) bereavement days need not be consecutive, and not necessarily be within the five (5) day framework.

Absent extenuating circumstances and written approval of the City Manager, immediate family bereavement leave must be taken within seven (7) calendar days of the death. Immediate family shall include the employee's parents, step-parents, spouse or domestic life partner, children, step-children and siblings. Domestic Life Partner is defined as two (2) persons in a committed relationship of a two (2) year or longer duration and residing in the same domicile. In any calendar year, an employee may receive bereavement leave for the death of his or her spouse or domestic life partner, but not for both.
