Research and Scholarship. The faculty member recognizes that effective research and scholarship enhances teaching and the reputation of the University and the faculty member accepts the obligation to develop, improve and demonstrate scholarly competence. Faculty members are expected to be active in research and scholarship. In the College of Professional Studies and in the University Libraries, faculty members are expected to engage in professional development, unless a faculty member in the College of Professional Studies has elected to engage in research and scholarship commensurate with faculty elsewhere at the University (see Appendix I).

Research and Scholarship. A hallmark of a university education is that students are taught by active and successful scholars and researchers. At Nipissing University, research and scholarly activity are expected of all members of faculty. In order to evaluate faculty within the context of a “teacher-scholar” model, Nipissing University embraces the Boyer1 model of scholarship as the basis for assessing faculty members for tenure and promotion2. All Members are expected to have developed an academic field of specialization and/or an area of focus and will demonstrate knowledge of the field of specialization and its relation to their discipline or disciplines. Evidence to be used to evaluate performance in this category will primarily focus on the breadth of the candidate's published work and its relationship to the discipline and/or professional field. Evidence used to evaluate the candidate's knowledge of the discipline and/or professional field will include a written statement by the candidate outlining the candidate's research program and its relationship to the discipline. Candidates for tenure or promotion will engage in scholarly work appropriate to the profession or discipline with the fundamental expectation that the results of scholarly work will be shared with other members of the profession, and the academic community, and other appropriate outlets. Typically, a candidate’s dossier will include a mix of peer-reviewed research and other works, and the evaluators must determine whether the total package of research and scholarly productivity meets the requirements for tenure and/or promotion. Work achieved prior to employment at Nipissing University shall be included and valued in the assessment, however all candidates will be expected to demonstrate that they have continued to be active and productive in research and scholarship since the date of appointment at Nipissing. Evaluation of scholarly work for tenure and promotion at all ranks will address the quality and significance of the work through written references provided by external peers. Where appropriate, candidates for tenure or promotion should have demonstrated their willingness to apply for external research funding to support their program of research. Research and Scholarship. The University will generally ensure that the results of University research and scholarship by its employees are published and made generally available, except to the extent the University needs to protect its Intellectual Property and encourage its commercial development and application, in accordance with this clause and the University's policy in relation to Intellectual Property from time to time.
Research and Scholarship a) Research and scholarship means the creation, discovery, integration, synthesis, interpretation, dissemination, and/or application of knowledge related to one’s academic discipline and/or profession, as well as applying for grants and contracts. Research and scholarship contribute to professional fulfillment and intellectual vitality at the institution. Members’ research activities should serve teaching excellence, support the University’s programs and research priorities, and enhance its reputation for academic quality. b) It is the right and duty of Members to make the results of their research and scholarship available. This may take the form of peer-reviewed publication through invited or refereed journal publication, invited or refereed papers or conference presentations, workshops, invited or reviewed performances or exhibitions, published books, patents, and products. The Parties also affirm that the University, as a place for applied research, will acknowledge and support non-peer reviewed publication for professional audiences and the public at large.
Research and Scholarship. 8.6.1 The parties agree that all Members in a university community have the right and responsibility to participate in research and scholarship (including the preparation or performance of creative works and reflective inquiry) and the dissemination of the results of research by means appropriate to the discipline. Members who apply for and receive a reduction in teaching assignment for the purposes of research or are engaged in Graduate instruction have an increased responsibility to engage in scholarly activities. Scholarly activities include publications, performances, presentations, compositions, creative work and other such activities. Members who engage in such scholarly activities have the responsibility to show integrity therein, and to make efforts to disseminate the results of their scholarship or exhibit the results of their creative work.
Research and Scholarship a) To continue as effective teachers, faculty members must remain in contact with the most recent advances in their disciplines and, when possible, contribute to this advancement. Faculty members, through peer reviewed scholarship, or creative projects or performances, must demonstrate their expertise beyond the University in a forum that is appropriate to the discipline and at least regional in scope. This shall serve as the researdch and scholarship standard for tenure and promotion. b) The evaluation standard for tenure and promotion of faculty research and scholarship may include: • Presentation of papers, the publication of books, monographs, articles, book reviews, • artistic performances, • artistic exhibitions; and/or • chairing and/or leading academic forums.. • Except for the primary job assignment, no other evaluation component shall be assigned as much importance as Research and Scholarship.

Research and Scholarship. Members’ Rights, Duties and Responsibilities with respect to Research and Scholarship are described in Article 23.4. Factors that will be considered include but are not limited to: the creation, discovery, integration, synthesis, interpretation, dissemination, and/or application of knowledge; application for grants and contracts; the publication of that research and scholarship in peer- reviewed and non-peer reviewed publications for academic, professional and public audiences; and presentations at conferences, workshops, performances, and exhibitions.
Research and Scholarship which in general includes: research, scholarly and critical or creative work within the faculty member's field; the dissemination of such work through respected publications, presentation of scholarly papers, exhibitions and performances, and other appropriate means; the supervision of student research and theses, and the seeking of external research funding as appropriate to the discipline and the member’s research profile. The primary objectives of such research shall be to increase knowledge and understanding and to further the faculty member’s teaching and scholarly competence.
Research and Scholarship. In addition to a demonstrable teaching ability, the post holder will be expected to have an independent research profile and the ability to secure grant awards from national / international agencies and/or industry to fund their research activities which would include the recruitment of both postgraduate students and postdoctoral research fellows; contribute to existing School/Centre and DCU-wide research initiatives and expand their network within DCU, nationally and internationally.
