Short Term Vacancies. (a) For the purposes of this Article, short-term vacancies are vacancies which the employer intends to fill for a definite period or on a non-continuing basis. The vacancy may occur because of vacation, hiring lag, a leave of absence, a project or other non-permanent circumstance.
(b) An employee who is temporarily assigned to fill a short-term vacancy at a higher classification for a minimum of three consecutive work days shall be paid substitution pay in accordance with Article 25.04 from the first day of the assignment.

Short Term Vacancies. Managers will determine whether a short vacancy of 30 days or less will be filled in whole or in part. If filled, it will be filled by the senior qualified employee requesting vacancy if service requirements permit. The vacancy resulting from this appointment will also be considered a short vacancy under this rule and, if filled, will be filled in the same manner.

Short Term Vacancies. 1. A furloughed employee recalled to work to fill a vacancy which is expected to last continuously for one-half of one semester or which does last for one-half of one semester or more, shall receive salary for the period of said recall commensurate with the employee’s placement on the salary schedule as if the employee had been returned to full- time employment.
a. An employee recalled to work to fill a particular vacancy which is expected to last continuously for more than one-half of one semester shall receive all fringe benefits provided in Article 22 and pro-rata sick leave.
b. An employee recalled to work to fill a particular vacancy which is not expected to last for more than one-half of one semester, but which actually does last for more than one-half of one semester shall begin receiving the fringe benefits provided in Article 22 and pro-rata sick leave only after the recalled employee has worked for one-half of one semester continuously filling a particular vacancy.
c. A suspended employee recalled to work to fill a vacancy may not use any accumulated sick leave during the period of his or her recall to fill said vacancy.
2. A suspended employee recalled to fill a vacancy for less than one-half of one semester or who works continuously filling more than one vacancy, none of which lasts for more than one-half of one semester, shall be paid as day-to-day substitutes at the rate determined by the board and shall be entitled to no paid leave or any other fringe benefits under this Agreement.
Short Term Vacancies. If the option for changing to a vacating employee’s place in the schedule is not feasible in a particular situation or the vacancy is for a short term, the following process will be followed:

Short-term vacancies caused by an employee’s Leave of Absence or workers’ compensation claim shall be filled by offering the available shifts to current employees before bringing in someone from outside the building to cover the shifts. The Employer shall not be required to offer a shift to an employee if such a shift would require payment of overtime to the employee.

This Article will not apply where the Company does not expect a vacancy to exceed ninety (90) continuous calendar days or where the vacancy is caused by illness, accident, vacations or leaves of absence, including pregnancy and parental leave. Such vacancies shall be filled in accordance with the Temporary Transfer language contained in Article15.
b. If a position becomes vacant on a temporary basis for more than ninety (90) continuous calendar days, subject to the restrictions listed above, it will be posted as a temporary position and the successful applicant will remain in the position until the incumbent associate returns to the position at which time all associates affected by the temporary posting will revert back to their original positions. The successful applicant will be paid in accordance with Article 15.02 (a).
