Teaching Assistant Evaluation. This is the basic Evaluation Form. Departmental forms may contain other job related details and more or less commentary space, but the core elements of this form must be retained.
Teaching Assistant Evaluation. I. Where applicable, Employees shall use instructional rating reports in each course that they teach. Such reports will be designed in a way that reflects the duties assigned. These reports shall be submitted to the employing unit. Wherever practical, instructional rating reports shall not be the sole means for evaluating an Employee’s performance.
II. The faculty supervisor of each course staffed by an Employee shall submit each semester to the unit administrator a formal written evaluation of each supervised Employee. After notifying the Employee, selected members of the employing unit may visit and observe the Employee teaching in the instructional setting. Additionally, upon Employee request in writing, the Employer may observe, when appropriate, the Employee teaching in the instructional setting. Information from these visits and observations shall be used in the evaluation.
III. Student evaluation of Employees (or summaries thereof), formal written evaluations, and any supplementary information shall be placed in the Employee’s personnel record for use by the employing unit and the Employee in accordance with Section IV. This material shall remain on active file until the Employee’s teaching role ends after which a copy of the record shall be provided to the Employee upon written request.
IV. Evaluation material described in Sections I, II and III may be used in overall evaluations.
V. The faculty supervisor shall consider Employee requests to evaluate discussion sections separately from lecture sections.
VI. Employees shall have the opportunity to comment in writing upon the ratings received and such comments shall be placed in the Employee’s personnel record.
VII. Upon Employee request, the evaluator shall meet with the Teaching Assistant to discuss the completed formal evaluation.
VIII. The Employer shall provide the Employee with a copy of the formal written evaluation within thirty (30) days of the receipt of all relevant materials.
Teaching Assistant Evaluation a. The evaluation of Teaching Assistants will be based on the following considerations:
i. The purpose of evaluation is to obtain the improvement of instruction and to encourage the growth of professional attitude and responsibility on the part of the staff member. The most vital part of the procedure is the sharing of ideas for the staff member’s improvement and success. This mutual interchange of ideas results in benefits to staff and pupils.
ii. If a Teaching Assistant is not performing satisfactorily, he or she should be given assistance by supervisors and principals to help improve.
iii. The impetus for correcting and alleviating weaknesses will be a responsibility of both the assistant and administrator. An assistant will be periodically evaluated and such weaknesses as he or she may have will be thoroughly discussed with him or her by the evaluator. At the end of each subsequent year, the likelihood of his or her being retained will be discussed with him or her.
iv. Teaching assistants shall be evaluated only by personnel qualified by training and experience to do so.
v. Both the evaluator and the assistant will sign the approved district evaluation form. The assistant’s signature on the form shall not necessarily constitute agreement with the evaluation.
vi. When the administration makes any changes in the format of the evaluation form, they will contact the Executive Board of the P.C.S.T.A. to review the proposed changes and discuss the rationale behind said changes.
vii. Committee membership will not be used as a criteria in evaluation. All committee service will be on a voluntary basis.
viii. Each observation for the purpose of formal written evaluation will be followed within two weeks by a conference with the evaluator. This conference, which should be conducted in a spirit of friendly cooperation, is the most important step of the evaluation procedure. If it is slighted by the evaluator, or taken lightly or defensively by the assistant, the most hopeful part of the evaluation procedure will be lost. This point cannot be over emphasized.
Teaching Assistant Evaluation a. Where applicable, Teaching Assistants shall use the current CMU Student Opinion Survey (SOS) course evaluation forms in each course that they teach. These surveys shall be completed by students enrolled in the course and submitted to the employing unit. At the discretion of the instructor of record and/or supervisor the SOS may be supplemented by additional information gleaned from faculty evaluations.
b. The faculty supervisor of each course taught by a Teaching Assistant (in some cases a Graduate Coordinator) shall submit to the department chair/unit administrator a formal written evaluation of each supervised Teaching Assistant. The evaluation shall occur during the Spring semester of that Graduate Assistant’s appointment, or once a year for those on appointments of less than one academic year. After notifying the Graduate Assistant, selected members of the employing unit may visit and observe the Graduate Assistant teaching in the instructional setting. Notice should be provided at least five (5) business days in advance of the visit. Additionally, upon Graduate Assistant request in writing, CMU may observe, when appropriate, the Graduate Assistant teaching in the instructional setting. Information from these visits and observations may be used in the evaluation.
