Unexcused Absence. Although the effect of absence of teaching and/or research faculty members is difficult to measure, unauthorized or unjustified absence from class, research, counseling activities or other scheduled duties in excess of five (5) consecutive scheduled or regular work days is sufficient basis for withholding salary for the work days absent pending investigation and/or an acceptable explanation of the circumstances of the absence.
Unexcused Absence. Absence of an employee from duty, including any absence for a single day or part of a day, which is not authorized by a specific grant or leave of absence under the provisions of this Agreement, shall be deemed to be an unexcused absence without pay and subject to disciplinary action up to and including discharge as provided for in Article 5 of this Agreement.
Unexcused Absence. Truancy is an unexcused absence. Ordinary medical, optical and dental appointments should be scheduled outside of school hours. Parents are advised that family trips, non-school sponsored sports events, vacations and non-school activities should be scheduled outside of school hours. The consequence for the student is as follows:
a. An unexcused absence means that teachers are not required to re-administer assessments, accept missed assignments or assist in make-up work. Any student with an unexcused absence may receive a 'zero' for all graded work on the day of the absence.

In the event that an employee who has pre-approved, scheduled ELB which adjoins a holiday before and/or after the holiday, and is absent on 1) his or her last scheduled work day directly prior to the adjacent PTO, if the PTO precedes the holiday, or 2) directly after the adjacent PTO, if the PTO follows the holiday, shall be considered “otherwise excused” and shall receive holiday pay. If the employee does not have enough time in their PTO bank to cover his/her entire absence, including pre-approved, scheduled PTO, and any contiguous unscheduled PTO, the employee shall not be considered “otherwise excused” and shall not receive holiday pay. Refer instead to the above Section 8.2 Holiday Eligibility, which refers to eligibility dependent on presentation of a doctor’s statement. This language should not be construed to replace or change the Medical Center’s policy on excessive, or unexcused absenteeism.
