Bi-Lingual Pay. Employees possessing relative fluency in a language other than English, who are assigned in writing by the Sheriff or his/her designee to use such ability for special assignment, shall receive an additional allowance to the affected employee’s base pay of $25.00 per month.

Bi-Lingual Pay. The County shall provide Bi-lingual pay at 75 cents per hour provided the employee has both demonstrated proficiency in the language to the satisfaction of the Department Head and whose Department Head requires them to use a foreign language in the course of their employment. Bi-Lingual Pay. Employees possessing relative fluency in a language other than English may qualify for foreign language duty. Employees who qualify for foreign language duty will receive a stipend of seventy-five dollars ($75.00) per month, when the following criteria are met: 1. The Sheriff, at his or her discretion, approves the employee in writing for foreign language duty. Employees shall not be denied for whim or capricious reasons. 2. The employees using foreign language skills during his or her own regular duties, including call outs; 3. The employee makes a written request to participate in the foreign language duty; and 4. The employee establishes that he or she possesses sufficient fluency in the language by demonstrating conversational fluency, which will be evaluated by a County approved interpreter or language assessment program. The County shall issue a proficiency test to employees who request to participate in the foreign language duty program set out within this provision. Issuance of the proficiency test shall occur at a time and place as determined by the County. To remain eligible for foreign language duty, employees must maintain proficiency in the language. Proficiency shall be demonstrated every two (2) years.

At that time the Director of Human Resources & Risk Management will certify the employee to receive the Bilingual Pay. Payment shall be effective at the beginning of the pay period following certification. The County may periodically review positions covered by the bilingual provision to determine the number and location of required positions. The County may require retesting and recertification. Bilingual pay may be removed when no longer required of the position or the individual no longer meets fluency requirements. Employees shall no longer be eligible for pay when they are on extended Federal or State leave.

Bi-Lingual Pay. Employees who are qualified by the department as bi-lingual in English and Spanish or Japanese, or a language spoken by over ten percent (10%) of City residents as documented by the most recent U. S. Census, will receive a monthly premium of five percent (5%) of their regular base pay.
Bi-Lingual Pay. The City shall pay 3% above base salary to employees who are approved by their department head and the Director of Human Resources to become certified by the County of Los Angeles or other agencies approved by the City. The certification of tests for written and oral proficiency in Spanish, Farsi, Korean, Russian, Sign or any other language designated by the City. Those employees who receive a bi-lingual pay will be required to speak the alternate language in the course and scope of their employment. In addition, if receiving the pay, an employee may be asked to assist in translating even if unrelated to his/her specific job duties. The initial fees for any testing required to obtain certification shall be borne by the City. If the employee fails to obtain the certification, subsequent attempts will be paid for by the employees.
Bi-Lingual Pay. Bi-lingual employees (Spanish) shall receive One Hundred and Twenty-Five Dollars ($ 125.00) per month. This payment shall be made to individuals who have taken and passed a proficiency test and who are utilized by the department for more difficult interpreter work, translator work, testifying in court, etc. It is understood that, relative to incidental bilingual contacts, per previous past practice, Unit employees will endeavor to communicate with non-English speaking persons to the best of their ability without additional compensation.
