LABORATORY PROGRESSION. OPERATING PROGRESSION
LABORATORY PROGRESSION. All employees are required to perform work within their capability. All Laboratory employees are required to progress to Senior Technician #1. Progression to Technician Specialist is voluntary and is based on being placed in the full rotation of laboratory positions and two years experience at the Senior Technician #1 level. This may be modified as required over time. Specific job details and tasks will evolve and change over time, and will be incorporated into the skills and activities as needed to ensure a competitive position. Special assignments will only be paid for move-up to the Laboratory Supervisor. The company, operating conditions permitting, will provide move-up opportunities on a balanced basis. All employees will have an annual capability and feedback review with the Laboratory Supervisor. Employees will undergo an ongoing verification of their skills. Employees will follow one of two schedules designed to cover weekends at straight time. - MONDAY - THURSDAY SCHEDULE Normal hours of work Monday through Thursday from 0700 -1700, plus one Sunday every five weeks from 0630 - 1630. - TUESDAY - FRIDAY SCHEDULE Normal hours of work Tuesday through Friday from 0700 - 1700, plus one Saturday every five weeks from 0630 - 1630. Employees who do testing will continue practice of early weekday hours (0630 - 1630) for unit stream and finished product. No EDO’s with this schedule; no overtime meals during normal schedule. Coverage on designated statutory holidays at discretion of Laboratory Supervisor. No extra days granted if statutory holiday falls on scheduled day off. Pay equalization at approximately 40 hours per week will be adopted. If an employee is unable to obtain the skills required for a classification within the progression, the Company, after development attempts and consultation with the Union, may deploy or reclassify the employee to a position compatible with their skills and ability. Employees must achieve and maintain the minimum mandated progression stage for continued employment.
LABORATORY PROGRESSION. WAGE SCHEDULE
1. For the purpose of movement in the reverse direction of the progression a surplus Lab Technician will displace the most junior Lab Technician in the progression. Lab Trainees at Technician 2 and Lab Technician 1 will be curtailed in that order.
2. The wage rate for new hires will be determined by the Company, based on the qualifications of the new employee and as per the Lab Progression & Wage Schedule.
3. New hires who prove to be unacceptable during the first year of their training period, employment will be terminated.
4. Employees who prove unacceptable during their training will be regressed to their previous position provided a vacancy exists.
5. Overtime or Temporary coverage will only be filled by qualified individuals (Lab Technicians first followed by qualified shift operators).
6. Upon accepting a Lab Technician posting, the successful applicant(s) must progress from Technician 1 to Technician 2 within 12 months, by completing the general work area ‘Lab Level 1’. The ‘Lab Level 1’ work area includes the following sign-offs/course completion: Laboratory Training of Operations Personnel – All Area sign-offs including Lab Technician specific items. Chem 110 (and prerequisite Math 110) offered by Lambton College (assuming course availability). SHE Training Matrix – Lab Technician Training Progression Sign-off Form for Lab Technicians 7. Progression from Lab Technician 2 to Lab Technician 3 must be completed within 12 months by completing an advanced work area, ‘Lab Level 2’ as well as progressing in advanced work area ‘Analyzers’. The ‘Lab Level 2’ work area includes the following sign-offs/course completion: Laboratory procedures relating to equipment maintenance and calibration Chem 210 offered by Lambton College (assuming course availability) Post-Secondary level course focusing on advance Laboratory skills. The intent is emphasis on Analytical Chemistry with a large portion dedicated to lab work and techniques GC Hardware and Software course (assuming course availability) Training Progression Sign-off Form for Lab Technicians 8. Progression from Lab Technician 3 to Lab Technician 4 must be completed within 12 months by completing advanced work area ‘Analyzers’. LABORATORY PROGRESSION. In upgrading (i.e. a change to a higher classification for less than thirty (30) days in a calendar year unless extended by mutual written agreement and the thirty days excludes any vacation coverage) the opportunity will be given to the most senior qualified person in the overtime work group involved. Relief jobs are not indicated on this chart but may be assigned as required in any job classification. For the purpose of job progression, relief jobs are considered equivalent to other jobs in the classification. Vacation Relief positions in the Laboratory progression will be filled from within each respective by the junior employee unless more senior employee wants the job. Vacation and sick relief assignments are for one year at a time.
