Leave for Personal Illness. (a) Following one semester of State service, or its equivalent, employees may be granted leave for personal illness at the discretion of the president's designee. Subject to approval of the president's designee, such approval not to be unreasonably withheld, a maximum number of five (5) days may be granted during any one year of the Agreement (July 1 - June 30) for absences due to a temporary disability. An employee unable to perform the duties of the employee's position due to personal illness shall notify the president's designee. Employees with scheduled duties (i.e. teaching, leading discussion sections, etc.) shall provide ample prior notice to the president's designee; but in no event later than two hours before the commencement of the scheduled duty, where practicable. The president's designee may, at any time, require the employee to provide suitable medical evidence substantiating the claimed temporary disability and/or be examined by a physician selected by the college at its expense. Such examination may also be required of any employee absent due to a claimed temporary disability prior to and as a condition of return to work. Should the campus president's designee believe that medical evidence does not substantiate a claimed temporary disability, use of leave for personal illness shall be disallowed and the employee shall be placed on leave without pay. (b) Subject to prior approval of the president's designee, such approval not to be unreasonably withheld, some or all of the five (5) days provided during any one year of the Agreement (July 1 - June 30) may be used for absences due to substantiated illness or death in the employee's immediate family (spouse, child, sibling, parent, grandparent, in-laws, or any person with whom the employee has been making his or her home). (c) In the event the employee has been granted a leave for personal illness pursuant to Sections (a) or (b) of this Article and the specific condition upon which such leave was granted continues after the five (5) days has been exhausted, the employee shall be eligible for up to an additional twenty-eight (28) consecutive calendar days of leave without pay once during the period identified in the letter of notification as the anticipated duration of employment or the current academic year. Board approved leaves shall not affect seniority within the District. A request for a leave for personal illness should be made of the Board prior to such time as accumulated medical leave has expired and the request should be accompanied by a doctor’s certificate as proof of disability. The beginning date of a leave for personal illness is the first working day the bargaining unit member is absent for illness, after all sick and medical leave days are exhausted. When granted a personal illness leave, the Board will maintain the hospitalization insurance coverage for said bargaining unit member through the month following the date of the beginning of such leave and/or according to provisions set forth in the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993. Coverage beyond the Board’s contribution will be an option of the bargaining unit member by remitting the premium on a monthly basis; however, the last day of coverage will not be extended beyond the last day the bargaining unit member is considered employed by the Board, unless the bargaining unit member is eligible for coverage as a retiree. Leave for personal illness will be terminated on the last day of each bargaining unit member’s contract year.

Leave for Personal Illness. After five (5) years of continuous employment in the River Valley School System, a teacher will be granted a leave of absence, without pay, for up to one (1) year for health reasons. Requests for such leave will be supported by appropriate medical evidence.

Leave for Personal Illness. Full time teachers are to be granted sick leave privileges. Full time teaching staff will be granted (10) paid sick days at the start of the school year and an additional five (5) days on January 1 of the school year. Sick leave time can accumulate up to 340 days. Sick leave shall be interpreted to mean personal illness, quarantine at home, birth of a child, or serious illness in the immediate family or household. Note: Immediate family is interpreted to mean spouse, domestic partner, child, parent, stepparent, sibling, grandparent, grandchild, mother-in-law, father-in-law, brother or sister-in-law, son or daughter-in-law. The Board may require a physician’s certificate, or, if the treatment is by prayer or spiritual means, that of a spiritual practitioner of such person’s faith, as a basis for pay during leave after an absence of three days for personal illness, or as it may deem necessary in other cases. Members of the bargaining unit may leave their assigned duties prior to the beginning or the end of the teacher work day for the purpose of going to a doctor/dental appointment. This leave shall be for personal use or for members of the immediate family as defined in Article 7.2 of the teachers contract and without affecting the accumulated sick leave. The leave shall be granted under the following conditions: 7.2.1. No more than 4 times per year. Exceptions to this can be made in unusual circumstances. 7.2.2. Leave shall not exceed 60 minutes prior to the beginning or the end of the teacher work day. Exceptions to this can be made in unusual circumstances. 7.2.3. Must provide the administrator 24-hour notice, except for emergencies. The building principal shall make the necessary arrangements. 7.2.4. Financial reimbursement shall be as per current contract language.

A teacher's unadjusted accumulated sick leave will be provided on the statement of earnings and deductions attached to the paycheque. An updated statement shoving the accumulation sick leave will be provided to any teacher, upon application the secretary-treasurer.
