Mission College Course Description. HS/Adult School/ROP Course Description This course provides techniques for medical word building and interpretation using basic word elements (root words, prefixes and suffixes) of Greek and Latin origin. Students learn anatomical, physiological, and pathological medical terminology, as well as therapeutic and diagnostic words, with an overview of each body system. Students demonstrate their ability to define, pronounce, and understand the meaning of medical terms through assignments such as analyzing medical records and creating a PowerPoint presentation. This unit trains students to converse more efficiently with doctors, nurses, other medical and support staff, and patients. Students will learn more about common anomalies, laboratory examinations, medical procedures, medications, and abbreviations. The basic medical terminology provided in the first semester will provide the framework needed before advancing to a more comprehensive medical terminology in the second semester, designed forstudents pursuing work in the medical field. This unit focus on the many components of medical terminology and how to break down a medical term by simply knowing the meaning of the root, prefix and/or suffix. Students will identify the roots, suffixes and prefixes of vocabulary used in medical offices, hospitals and other health settings. Students will review the nervous, skeletal, cardiovascular, muscle and other major systems of the human body and define and classify terms related to physiology, anatomy and pathological conditions. Students will learn over three hundred and fifty word parts (roots, suffixes, prefixes) and basic elements in different combinations, in order to interpret and understand more than ten thousand complex medical terms. Students will also learn over one hundred medical abbreviations. In addition, medical vocabulary will be reviewed at the end of every chapter of course text that will enable students to describe and interpret pathologies, anatomy and physiological processes of body systems. Students will demonstrate this knowledge through formative and summative assessments that test spelling, pronunciation and meaning. Students will also be able to read medical documents with understanding. Students develop a working vocabulary with applications in therapy and diagnostics. HS/Adult School/ROP Course Description The course is designed to prepare the student to provide mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing and closed chest heart compression (Basic Life Support) to a victim of sudden death. This course is taught according to guidelines of the American Heart Association. AHA CPR/AED course completion cards will be issued to students who successfully meet course objectives. Students can quickly become proficient in CPR, with video-based and hands on skills training. Students will train to be proficient in the use of an AED. Mission College Course Description. HS/Adult School/ROP Course Description This is a lecture and laboratory course dealing with the fundamentals of food preparation. Students practice the basic principles of food preparation and prepare small quantities from standard recipes, and international cuisines are introduced. This class covers beginning recipes including appetizers, soups, salads, main courses, breads, desserts and pastries. Culinary Arts Level 1 This is a preparatory course addressing many aspects of food preparation including safety and sanitation, measurement basics, kitchen tools and uses, nutrition, basic food science, and of course meal planning and preparation. The goal of this course is to introduce the kitchen novice to the wonderful world of food and flavors. This course is open to all interested students. Students also begin to gain the necessary critical thinking and technical skills required across the various professional careers within Graphic Design. The students develop an understanding of video production and post-production in a series of hands-on exercises. camera operation, video and audio production techniques, special effects, the basic principles of motion graphics, video editing and audio editing are explored. Access to a camera capable of recording video, and a basic understanding of computer system operation are required. Video Production is a year-long course in which students will learn the foundations of video production: developing an idea or story, pre- production planning, video photography, lighting, and basic sound, and digital post- production using video editing software.
