In May 2010, 51 out of the 56 UME students graduated from the E2006 class. There were 4 UME students delayed and are expected to graduate in May 2011. Only 1 student was lost to attrition.

Beginning in Fall 2010, approximately 80% of our first semester students will have their literacy skills assessed post-admission. All of our incoming 1st-year Business will also be assessed for their numeracy skills. The results of these assessments will help us determine the level of support that students will require to be successful in their first semester Communications and Math courses here at Xxxxxxx. Those in need of remediation will receive enhanced levels of scheduled instruction. One recent initiative is to offer compressed General Education courses during the May /June period. This provides an opportunity for students in their graduating year who have not completed or may have failed a General Education course, the opportunity to repeat the course in time to graduate. This promising practice could be expanded to include other courses that have higher than average non-completion rates.

Durham College has implemented an “Academic Alert” process for students in all years of study to identify those students who, by mid‐term, are academically at risk of not completing their course requirements. The student is contacted in writing by the faculty, outlining the area of concern and encouraging the student to meet with the faculty and take advantage of the appropriate student supports. This positive, supportive approach supports student engagement and success. Summer Warm‐ups are provided to first‐year students prior to starting college to refresh their math skills. This no‐cost option, offered through academic upgrading, has received a positive response from participating students. The Student Academic Learning Services team provides supplemental academic support to students in all schools to support overall student retention and success initiatives. These staff members have provided specialized assistance to both First Generation college students, in addition to our growing ESL and EAL (English as an Additional Language) populations, who are, generally speaking, higher risk academically and more vulnerable to attrition. This team coordinates peer tutoring programs, one‐on‐one learning strategy sessions, subject specific support, writing assistance, and workshops for students. The team also works closely with individual faculty members as well as student liaisons to ensure that students are referred to our services at the first sign of academic difficulty. Ministry funding directed at providing on‐going Learning Strategist/Counsellor support for students with disabilities, particularly among students with learning disabilities and ADHD, is absolutely critical in ensuring a significant number of our students learn how to manage a more demanding academic work load while developing specific strategies to reduce the impact of their disabilit(ies) on their ability to learn and achieve academic success. Xxxxx’x Career Services department manages a suite of co-curricular programs that are designed to not only track a student’s activities and achievements outside the classroom, but to create opportunities for skill development and to keep the student more actively engaged with the institution and community, positively contributing to their success as students. For example, Mentorship Plus is a program that will help students through their most important transitions. The first transition is the one from high school to university. As first-year students they come to Xxxxx’x campus with a mixture of excitement, confusion, anxiety, and lots of questions. Mentorship Plus participants receive support and encouragement during this time to ensure that their first-year experience is a successful one. After first year, Mentorship Plus continues to provide support through to the next major transition - from Xxxxx to chosen career or advanced academics. Mentorship Plus eases some of the pressure around, “What am I going to do with my life?” When students are in their graduating year, Mentorship Plus gives them a glimpse of what their future careers could be like. As participants xxx Xxxxxxxxxx Plus, studentsl receive training customized to their role in order to ensure that they understand the mentoring roles, expected behavior, and purpose of the program. Their training also highlights the key skills and characteristics for mentors/mentees. As they progress through their Xxxxx years they acquire sought after leadership, communication and problem solving skills and each year in Mentorship Plus builds on the skills and experiences they have developed in the year previous.

Student advisors are focusing on students who are entering their final year of study to inform them of their remaining requirements. Requirements missing from previous years are being noted on student records for their reference and an email is sent to students reminding them to check these notes and to contact faculty advisors if necessary.
