Personal Discretionary Leave. In any given year, up to four (4) of the nine (9) paid sick leave days available for personal necessity may be used for personal discretionary leave as follows: a. With prior notice and, if the position so requires, conditional upon the availability of a substitute, a Unit Member may take up to two (2) days consecutively and/or in conjunction with a holiday, vacation or school break. If more Unit Members request personal days than there are substitutes available, requests shall be filled on a first come/first served basis. b. Notification of personal leave shall be given to the Unit Member’s supervisor at the earliest possible time to facilitate school planning. c. Unit Members may use any remaining personal discretionary days at their discretion, but these days may not be taken consecutively, or in conjunction with a holiday, vacation or school break, and may not be combined with any personal discretionary days taken pursuant to paragraph 2a above. d. Unit Members may not use a personal discretionary day on a staff development day that is scheduled immediately preceding or following a holiday, student vacation or school break. e. Only full days may be used for personal discretionary leave. f. On the Absence Report Form, the Unit Member shall be able to write “Personal” as the reason for absence. All other provisions of sections a, b, c, d, and e (above) shall remain in force. These “personal” days shall not be cumulative from year to year, but any unused personal days shall accumulate as part of a Unit Member’s sick leave account.

Personal Discretionary Leave a. Leave of absence without pay will be granted to a maximum of 5 days per school year at the request of a teacher for personal reasons, by arrangement with the principal and subject to the availability of a suitable teacher teaching on call or replacement teacher. Such leave availability is pro-rated for part year appointments. b. Such leave shall not be granted for reasons of earning money, apart from honoraria for education related activities. Nor shall such leave normally be granted as an attachment at Christmas, Spring or Summer break.
Personal Discretionary Leave. An employee with one (1) year of continuous service shall be entitled to five (5) days discretionary leave without pay, annually. Leave of absence without pay will be granted to a maximum of five (5) days per year at the request of an employee in writing, for personal reasons, subject to the availability of a suitable substitute. This leave may, at the discretion of the Secretary Treasurer or delegate, be used to extend regular vacation periods, provided that the leave request is received four (4) weeks prior to the start of the leave.

Employees may not have more than five (5) accrued personal discretionary leave days or may use more than five (5) personal discretionary leave days per year. 2. Unused personal discretionary leave days will either be automatically converted to sick leave on the last working day of each school year or received as pay for any portion of the unused personal days. If a teacher chooses to receive pay for any portion of the unused personal days: (a) he/she must declare his/her election in writing to the District Business office by May 15, (b) he/she will receive seventy-five dollars ($75) per day for each day claimed, and (c) once the declaration is made, the days are non-retrievable as personal discretionary leave days, therefore days taken after May 15th shall be charged as leave without pay. 3. Teachers who do not choose to receive pay for their unused days may use any portion of their personal leave after May 15th. If the personal leave is denied by administration, then the requested days shall be converted to sick leave, or, at the teacher's election, paid at the rate of seventy-five dollars ($75 per day. Such election must be declared to the District Business office by June 20, and shall be paid in the next payroll cycle.

Personal Discretionary Leave. Educators with less than eight (8) years service to the District will receive three (3) days paid personal discretionary leave will be allowed each year. Educators with eight (8) or more years of service to the District will receive four (4) days paid personal discretionary leave each year. Personal leave must be requested in writing at least 24 hours in advance (can be waived in case of emergency) and be approved by the Building Principal. Personal discretionary leave days are not accumulative, except that a maximum of one (1) day may be rolled over into the following year. Otherwise, unused personal discretionary leave days will automatically be converted to sick leave on the last working day of each school year (June 30). Once converted, these sick leave days are not retrievable as personal discretionary leave days. Educators shall receive $125.00 per day for any unused personal leave that is not converted back to sick leave. Requests for rollover and/or payment of unused personal leave must be received in the business office by May 15. No more than the following numbers of educators may be gone on personal leave at any one time. Exceptions will be made at the discretion of the building principal.
Personal Discretionary Leave. Personal Business Leave shall only be used to transact personal business or for a religious observance that cannot be accomplished at times other than normal working hours. Personal Discretionary Leave is an absence of any faculty member for any other personal matters not defined above as Personal Business Leave. No reason shall be required for use of Personal Discretionary Leave. As of January 1, annually, each faculty member shall be credited with four (4) days of Personal Leave, including one Personal Business Leave day and three Personal Discretionary Leave days. A bargaining unit member with less than 100% of a full-time annual schedule, or newly hired during the current year, shall have the time credited proportionately for this leave. Personal Leave shall not be used in less than one-hour increments, nor for more than a maximum of two (2) full consecutive days of instructional duties. With approval of the bargaining unit member’s department chairperson/immediate administrator, the number of consecutive days used may be extended. Personal Leave shall not be unreasonably denied. The parties agree that there may be occasions when the faculty member’s presence is necessary at department meetings or on In-Service Day, and when their repeated absence from classes adversely impacts instructional integrity and quality. On such occasions, the chairperson may deny a request for Personal Discretionary Leave, and provide a rationale for the denial. Any leave taken on In-Service Day shall not exceed 6.5 hours.
