Catastrophic Leave means paid leave, which is transferred to a leave recipient from the Catastrophic Leave Pool.
Catastrophic Leave. A permanent employee who has exhausted all paid leave due to his/her catastrophic illness/injury, may request the District and CSEA to negotiate a Memorandum of Understanding providing for donation of sick leave. Any such donations shall be pursuant to the Memorandum of Understanding reached for the benefit of that employee, and shall be irrevocable. If agreement cannot be reached in a particular case, no donation of sick leave shall be permitted.
Catastrophic Leave means leave for a catastrophic illness or injury:
11.3.1.1 That is expected to incapacitate the receiving employee for an extended period of time beyond the employee’s paid leave entitlement; or,
11.3.1.2 That incapacitates a member of the employee’s immediate family, which incapacity requires the employee to take unpaid time off from work for an extended period of time beyond the employees paid leave entitlement to care for that family member; and,
11.3.1.3 That would create a financial hardship for the receiving employee if he/she were required to take extended time off work because he/she has exhausted all of his or her sick leave and other paid time off.
Examples of Catastrophic Leave in a sentence
Hours transferred from the Catastrophic Leave Bank to a recipient will be in the form of sick leave accruals and shall be treated as regular sick leave accruals.
The County Human Resources Department will operate a Catastrophic Leave Bank which is designed to assist any County employee who has exhausted all paid accruals due to a serious or catastrophic illness, injury, or condition of the employee or family member.
Upon approval, credits from the Catastrophic Leave Bank may be transferred to a requesting employee's sick leave account so that employee may remain in paid status for a longer period of time, thus partially ameliorating the financial impact of the illness, injury, or condition.
The program establishes and maintains a Countywide bank wherein any employee who wishes to contribute may authorize that a portion of his/her accrued vacation, compensatory time, holiday compensatory time or floating holiday be deducted from those account(s) and credited to the Catastrophic Leave Bank.
The Employee initiates a request for a Catastrophic Leave Bank to be established in accordance with this policy.
More Definitions of Catastrophic Leave
Catastrophic Leave is paid leave donated to an employee where the employee or the employee’s direct family member, as defined herein, has suffered a major non-job related physical or mental illness, injury or disability and the employee has exhausted or is about to exhaust all accrued leaves and is not receiving compensation from any other sources (i.e. workers’ compensation or disability). In such circumstances, an employee may be entitled to receive and use the accrued vacation, sick and/or compensatory leave time earned by another employee to extend the employee’s ability to take paid leave. For purposes of this Section, the term “direct family member” shall include the employee’s: spouse, child, father, mother, stepfather, stepmother, father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother, sister, grandparent, grandchild, or xxxxxx child. Both the donor and the recipient must be non-probationary, Regular, Full-time employees. Catastrophic Leave requests shall conform to the following criteria:
Catastrophic Leave means accrued sick leave in excess of 120 days. A sick leave account for employees with more than 120 days of sick leave to continue to accrue sick leave on a half time conversion rate for a catastrophic illness. This account is used only after an employee has exhausted their regular sick leave account due to catastrophic illness.
Catastrophic Leave. For employees needing to take catastrophic leave to take care of an ill or injured family member, we expanded the definition of family to include siblings, parents, parents-in-law, and grandparents. We also combined the Unit I and Unit II catastrophic leave banks and increased the maximum size of the bank to 8,000 hours.

5.5 Family Care and Medical leave Updated Version – TA Signatures dated 3/13/15 The governing Board shall grant Family Care and Medical Leave to eligible employees in accordance with current state and federal law. Employees taking this leave shall be reinstated in the same or comparable position upon returning from family care leave, except as allowed by law. Definitions: "Family care and medical leave" means any of the following:
(1) Leave for reason of the birth of a child of the employee, the placement of a child with an employee in connection with the adoption or xxxxxx care of the child by the employee, or the serious health condition of a child of the employee.
(2) Leave to care for a parent or a spouse who has a serious health condition.
(3) Leave because of an employee's own serious health condition that makes the employee unable to perform the functions of the position of that employee, except for leave taken for disability on account of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions.
Catastrophic Leave means a program that allows employees to donate specified types and amounts of leave to employees that have been granted unpaid leaves of absence for catastrophic need.
