Academic Workload. 13.1 Workload of Faculty Employees The normal workload of faculty employees shall include teaching, research/scholarly/creative activities, and service to the University in proportions of approximately 50%, 35% and 15% respectively of each employee's time, as governed by and varied in accordance with past practice. For each faculty a normal workload shall be defined by past practice.
Academic Workload. 1. The academic workload shall be assigned in a fair and equitable manner. To help ensure this goal, each member of a unit shall receive a copy of the Chair’s recommendations to the Xxxx/Director of the Library on workload, including any recommendations for overload payments, as well as a copy of the Xxxx’x/Director of the Library’s decision on these recommendations. 2. The academic workload of a Member in the regular stream includes in varying proportions teaching/professional librarianship, including the supervision of graduate students, scholarly activity including commitments to external granting agencies, administrative duties and other contributions to the University. The academic workload of a Member in the alternate teaching stream may include teaching, clinical supervision, coaching, professional development, and administrative duties. 3. The assignment of the workload shall be communicated in reasonable detail, in writing, to the Member by 1 June by the Xxxx/Director of the Library. The Xxxx/Director of the Library shall request the written advice of the unit concerned at least one month prior to 1 June and the Xxxx/Director of the Library shall normally accept the advice of the unit. The time-tabling of the teaching load/library assignment shall be communicated in writing to the Member by 1 July by the Xxxx/Director of the Library after consultation with the Registrar. For the duration of this agreement the Registrar shall have final authority in time-tabling all courses. 4. The composition of the workload of particular Members may vary with their discipline, and will take into account the capabilities of the Members, the need to maximise their potential and any obligations placed on them within the University's operations, consistent with the terms of this Agreement. In the assignment of teaching loads, the Deans, in consultation with the academic units, shall consider, not only the number of courses taught by a Member, but the size and type of such courses. It is understood that there will be no rigid formula for course assignments based solely on the number of separate courses taught by a Member. 5. The Xxxx/Director of the Library may include in Members' workloads any teaching/professional library assignment related to their discipline and any administrative activity that the Xxxx/Director of the Library considers necessary for the effective operation of the Faculty/Library or of the University program. Academic Workload. Full-time Instructors (a) Normally no later than one (1) month prior to each term, the workload of the Full-time Instructor will be assigned by the Xxxx or designate after consultation with the Instructor and the Member’s Chair or Director. The assignment of workload must take into account the differing pedagogical practices across the disciplines, and no Member will be assigned to teach courses outside the Member’s discipline. (b) Full-time Instructors will have access to annual vacation per Article 36. (c) Workload is thirty-five (35) hours per week as described in this Article. i) For appointments of ten (10) months per year, up to thirty (30) hours of classroom instruction over two out of three terms (Fall, Winter, Spring-Summer). ii) For appointments of twelve (12) months per year, up to thirty-six (36) hours of classroom instruction over three out of three terms (Fall, Winter, Spring-Summer). iii) The specific combination of scheduled teaching hours and teaching- related duties will be determined by the Xxxx in consultation with the Instructor and the Member’s Chair or Director. (d) Overload will be limited to six instructional hours per week over a ten (10) month or a twelve (12) month appointment. A Full-time Instructor will not be discriminated against by the Employer if the Full-time Instructor prefers not to teach more than the normal number of teaching hours per week as outlined in Article 23.14. (e) A Full-time Instructor’s workload may include labs and courses taught in more than one Faculty with the permission of the relevant Deans, after consultation with the Instructor and the Instructor’s home Department or school. (f) All reasonable efforts will be made to balance teaching workload hours. (g) The Xxxx, in consultation with the Chairs or Directors of academic units, will attempt to ensure a reasonably equitable workload among Members within an academic unit and among Members within a Faculty over time. The Chair or Director, after consultation with Members of the academic unit, will provide the Xxxx with a recommendation for an equitable workload within the academic unit. A Member who believes that the Member’s assigned teaching load is excessive in relation to other Members’ teaching load has the right to have the Xxxxxxx review the affected Member’s workload. Academic Workload. 18.1 Workload: Part-time Instructors (a) Part-time Instructors are responsible for all instruction and grading in an assigned course. (b) Part-time Instructor(s) will be available to meet with students outside of the official classroom time. (c) Limitations on part-time teaching are listed in Article 16.2(f). (d) Part-time Instructors may apply to their Xxxx for marking assistance in the same manner as Full-time Instructors.

Members shall be free to organise and to structure classroom and laboratory activities and to adopt reasonable means to maintain a learning environment, which is both productive and orderly. They shall have the right to rule on the use by students of recording devices and calculating devices in the classroom, laboratory or learning situation. 7. Members shall not alter or cancel scheduled instruction except with prior permission of the Chairperson/Director in any but exceptional circumstances.
