Deductions from Sick Leave Credits. For employees who are unable to work due to illness or injury while scheduled to work an eight (8) hour shift (Tango 1 or Tango 2), a deduction shall be made from accumulated sick leave credits for all normal working hours (exclusive of Statutory Holidays). For employees who are unable to work due to illness or injury while scheduled to work a Tango 3 or Zulu 1 shift, the employee shall receive the guaranteed minimum amount that would normally be paid for the shift. Casual EMS Employees shall have access to accrued sick leave credits during the posted and confirmed period for shifts scheduled. In addition, a casual EMS Employee who remains unable to work due to illness shall have access to accrued sick leave credits based on the average number of paid hours in the fifty two (52) weeks preceding the illness, or since date of hire, whichever is less. Pay-Out Of Unused Sick Leave Credits Employees who have entitlements to payout of unexpended sick leave credits under the terms of previous collective bargaining agreements will retain that entitlement. The details of this provision are outlined in Letter of Understanding Sick Leave And Pregnancy Employees shall have access to sick leave credits for illness which may arise during pregnancy while the Employee continues active duty with the Employer. In addition, sick leave for valid health related reasons related to the pregnancy and substantiated by a medical certificate shall be granted for the actual period of illness during the maternity leave. If an employee is denied long term disability coverage or is later removed from long term disability coverage pursuant to Appendix B or the terms of the long term disability plan, they shall have access to their sick leave benefits pursuant to Article 12.

Deductions from Sick Leave Credits. 19.08 In the final month of each calendar year the employer will automatically credit an employee’s accumulated sick leave account with any unused portion of sick leave credits. And an employee may elect, by properly notifying the CEO in writing, their wish to accumulate all or a portion of any unused credits, overtime hours and any unused vacation credits.

Notwithstanding the Director of Education or designate may require, given reasonable grounds, a Teacher to submit a certificate for a period of absence fewer than five (5) days from a Board-designated medical practitioner. The Employer will pay the cost of any medical certificate the Employer’s designated medical practitioner requested by the Employer with reasonable grounds. Deduction for absence because of illness, emotional or physical disability, or medical appointments shall be calculated to the nearest quarter of a day.
