Safe Workplace. A) The Employer and employees recognize the need for a safe and healthful workplace and agree to take appropriate measures in order that risks of accidents and/or occupational disease are reduced and/or eliminated. Employers will take all reasonable steps to eliminate, reduce and/or minimize threats to the safety of employees.

Recognizing that danger is an inherent aspect of law enforcement work, employees who have a reasonable basis for believing the assignment would constitute a danger to their health and safety shall immediately contact a supervisor who shall make a final determination with regard to safety. No directive shall be delayed pending such determination. All on-the-job injuries, no matter how slight, must be reported. Employees must immediately notify their supervisor if they are unable to work because of a work-related injury or illness.

The employer shall endeavour at all times to ensure that members who initiate a complaint under this article are not unduly displaced from their workspace or area as a result of any action by the employer in the investigation or dispensation of actions under the Respectful University policy and procedures. If these actions create a potential unsafe workspace, the employer will immediately rectify the situation; if members need to be removed from the physical space, the employer will consider the relocation of the respondent first. Alternatively, a Sessional Academic Staff member who believes that an alleged violation of this Article creates an unsafe workplace shall be entitled to request a change of physical space or other accommodations without fear of reprisal. When the Employer is aware that a patient/resident/client has a history of aggressive and /or violent behavior, the Employer shall make such information available to the employee. Upon admission or transfer the Employer will make every reasonable effort to identify the potential for aggressive behavior. In-services and/or instruction in caring for the violent patient will be provided by the Employer. The Employer will provide orientation, and/or in-service which is necessary for the safe performance of work including universal precautions, the safe use of equipment, safe techniques for lifting and supporting patients/residents/clients, and the safe handling of materials and products. The Employer will also make readily available information, manuals, on line tools and procedures for these purposes. The Employer will provide appropriate safety clothing and equipment to employees. Nurses who are hired to work at Nanaimo Seniors Village shall be provided with job – specific orientation, including job shadowing, and/or in-service where appropriate.
Safe Workplace. An employee who believes that an alleged violation of this Article creates an unsafe workplace shall be entitled to request a change of physical space or other accommodations without fear of reprisal.
