Firearms Qualification. Each employee who carries a firearm by virtue of his appointment shall each year qualify by scoring a minimum of seventy percent (70%) of the total possible points on a course of fire designated by the training officer for the type of weapon carried by the employee. Reasonable amounts of ammunition and shooting facilities for practice and qualification will be provided by the Department under rules specified by the training officer. Employees who fail to qualify shall receive special firearm training over a period of time.
Firearms Qualification. All CFO's hired subsequent to January 1, 1988 shall be required to qualify with a department approved firearm as part of his/her job assignment. Anyone who does not qualify shall be reviewed in a case by case basis for a possible exemption. All CFO's shall qualify in accordance with the Department's established qualification procedures as follows: All personnel who carry firearms in the performance of his/her duty shall meet the standards for qualification set forth by the Sheriff. Personnel must meet the standards for qualifications with each firearm they carry while on duty. No Correctional Facility Officer will be permitted to carry a weapon while on duty they are not qualified with, and the minimal acceptance performance will be seventy percent (70%) of the total possible score. A pass/fail performance level scoring method may also be used at the discretion of the Sheriff. If a corrections officer cannot meet minimum firearm qualifications he/she shall apply to the Firearms Review Board for a waiver. The Firearms Review Board shall consist of the following members: (1) Chief Firearms Instructor: Chairman (2) Corrections Officer firearm instructor (3) Union Representative After reviewing a written request from the corrections officer a hearing will be held by the Review Board. The officer requesting the waiver will be present and a hearing conducted. The Review Board will make a written recommendation to the Sheriff as to whether the waiver request will be denied or approved. Approval will require a majority vote. Upon receipt of a written report from the Review Board the Sheriff will deny or approve the waiver in writing to the employee.
Firearms Qualification. 49.1 All sworn members of the Canton Police Department must be re-certified annually with their duty sidearm. This re-certification shall be under the supervision of the Training Commander or the Range Officer and must meet all the requirements as set down by the Ohio Peace Officers Training Council. Any member failing to pass re-certification after three (3) attempts shall be placed on immediate suspension without pay and be scheduled to appear at a termination hearing before the Safety Director of the City of Canton, Ohio. 49.2 The City shall provide ammunition for duty weapons. 49.3 The City shall provide the opportunity for supplemental training for duty weapons in addition to the training required for the re-certification. During the months when shotgun qualification is being conducted at the outdoor range, officers will be permitted to use the range. The officers will be able to use the outdoor range between the morning and afternoon sessions by coordinating with the range officer for availability. 49.4 The City will provide two (2) days per month for patrolmen to sign up for and then use the indoor range. The City shall provide fifty (50) rounds of ammunition per session per officer for the training described in this paragraph. Firearms Qualification. The Employer agrees to pay Employees who are required to qualify annually as needed for Handgun Qualification Course of Fire for up to four (4) hours at the Employee's normal hourly rate of pay during the first-scheduled qualification attempt. Should an Employee fail their first attempt, they shall not be paid for any time spent in furtherance of subsequent qualification attempts. Firearms used for qualification shall be of the same type, model and caliber as will be used while the Employee is armed and on duty. The firearms qualification testing shall be limited to two (2) attempts. Depending on range availability, this must be accomplished within a thirty (30) day period. If an Employee fails to pass the firearms testing after two (2) attempts, the Employee shall be placed on administrative leave without pay for a period not to exceed thirty (30) days. If the Employee fails to obtain a retest date for firearms qualification prior to the expiration of their SPO License or their administrative leave, whichever occurs first, the Employee will be considered as having voluntarily quit. However, the failure to re-qualify shall not be considered a voluntary quit if the failure is attributable to a lack of firing range availability, which is beyond the Employee's control. Under such circumstances, the Employee shall remain on administrative leave without pay until such time as the firing range becomes available. To the extent possible, firearms qualification testing shall be scheduled at least thirty (30) to sixty (60) days prior to the expiration of the Employee's certification. The Employer agrees to provide Employees with instruction on firearms safety, handling and malfunctions prior to firearms qualifications. The Employer agrees to pay Employees for up to two (2) hours at their normal rate of pay for their attendance during this training. If an Employee fails to appear for any scheduled firearms training or qualification, they shall be subject to disciplinary action as detailed in Article VII of this Agreement.
Firearms Qualification. The County shall provide access to the above-described facilities for semi-annual firearms qualifications, and shall provide monies in its budget to purchase ammunition for officers’ use during such firearms qualifications. The County shall appropriate monies to provide each officer with fifty (50) rounds of duty ammunition and fifty (50) rounds of practice ammunition for each firearms qualification period, as well as ten (10) rounds of shotgun ammunition.
